Mārupe: Discover local history and leisure activities
Accommodation in Mārupe
Mārupe offers several different points of interest to consider when planning your trip: local history in public spaces, leisure activities and destinations in the surrounding area. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on culture, activities or both.
Townscape and history in Mārupe
The Mārupe water tower on Mārupītes gatve near Beržu iela is a prominent local landmark and often serves as a point of reference in the area. The Mārupīte River flows through the Mārupe area. Konrādu Square opened in September 2012 as Mārupe’s first public square. Its amenities include paved paths, seating, a children’s playground, lighting and free public Wi-Fi. The square is also home to the clock monument, unveiled in 2015; its pedestal features facts about the district’s history.
The foundation stone for today’s Mārupe Culture House, formerly Aizsargu nams, was laid in September 1936. The building was constructed as a house for the Aizsargi organisation. The Tourism and Crafts House at 10 Bebru iela opened in 2022 to promote tourism in the district and introduce visitors to craftspeople and home producers.
Culture and history in the surrounding area
Nearby is Švarcenieku Manor. It was built in 1826 as the manor owner Švarcs’s summer residence and was used for hunting and recreation. In 2016, it was granted the status of a locally significant architectural monument. The manor park has paths, rest areas, benches, bicycle racks, an information board and lighting.
The Rīgas Aviācijas muzejs is also located in the Mārupe area. Its collection includes 47 exhibits, including rare or unique military aircraft and helicopters. The exhibition covers aviation, space technology and air traffic control equipment.
Sport and leisure
Mārupe’s BMX sports park has a BMX track with a four-metre-high starting hill and a variety of banked turns. Bicycles and helmets are available for hire. The Tīraine ice-skating and roller-skating track is open free of charge to all residents in both summer and winter. Check its operating status before travelling.
Nearby, Tīraines staļļi offers riding lessons and equestrian facilities with paddocks, pastures, a training area and an indoor arena. The “JIP Mārupīte” recreation complex offers swimming, beach volleyball, football and wakeboarding. In the town of Mārupe, the “Purnavu muiža” hunting centre has the only enclosed 100-metre shooting range in the Baltics. The centre also offers a hunting simulator and hunting courses, through which a hunting licence can be obtained.
Routes and practical information
The “Medema purvs – soli pa solim” audio guide covers about 2.3 kilometres one way, or 4.6 kilometres for the round trip. The two figures distinguish the one-way distance from the total distance including the return journey.
Meraki Bake House in the centre of Mārupe, at 27 Daugavas iela, offers brownies, desserts, cakes and macarons. Lapiņmuiža is private property. Check access before planning a visit.
