Lipuški: Nature and History on Lake Rāzna
Accommodation in Lipuški
Lipuški lies on the southern shore of Lake Rāzna. The national park’s natural features, a cycling route, and local architectural and church history give the area its distinctive character. If you are looking for hotels in Lipuški, these highlights can help guide your choice of destination: consider whether you are especially interested in nature and landscapes, cycling, or cultural history.
Nature at Lake Rāzna
The interactive permanent exhibition “Iepazīsti un sajūti Rāznas Nacionālo parku!” introduces the national park’s natural assets and protected areas, as well as its lakes and forests. Information and photographs, along with several activity tables, complement the topics. The Rāzna National Park Nature Center also offers educational programs about lakes and forests, aquatic life, and what aquatic plants and animals can reveal about water quality. Other topics include landforms shaped by the Ice Age and the characteristics of coniferous forests on esker-like landforms.
The exhibition and educational programs focus on different aspects: the exhibition covers a broad range of topics, while the programs explore specific connections, such as water quality and landforms. The Sajūtu taka at the nature center is listed as open seasonally from May 1 to September 1. As this date range may change, check it before planning your trip.
Cycling Route and Swimming Area
The parking lot at the “Rāzna” Nature Education Center can serve as a possible starting and ending point for the “Around the Latgale Sea – Lake Rāzna” cycling route (Route 783). The address is Skolas iela 3, Lipuški, Mākoņkalna pagasts, Rēzeknes novads. The parking lot is an option, not a mandatory starting or ending point. If you plan your route around it, confirm that it is currently available before setting out.
A public swimming area is also listed in Lipuški. Check the facilities at the site before your visit.
Prayer House and History
The prayer house of the Lipuški Old Believer community was built in 1904 on Lake Rāzna, in the village of Lipuški. It is protected as a regionally significant architectural monument under state protection number 5830. Inside, the women’s and men’s sections are strictly separated. The prayer house features a magnificent metal chandelier with enamel and crystal pendants. The separation of the sections concerns how the interior is used; the chandelier, by contrast, is a decorative feature.
Another date in local church history concerns the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Lipuški: the newly built church was consecrated on June 18, 1895. The consecration year refers to the church, while 1904 is the year the prayer house was built.
Ludmila Merkulova’s collection of bells in Lipuški is another cultural attraction. A 2020 article describes it this way: no two bells are alike; each is characterized by its own sound and story.
