If you take cultural history and local traditions into account when choosing a travel destination, Bērzgale offers several specific themes to explore. They range from a permanent exhibition and historic buildings to festival traditions and a lake with an artificial island. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on the museum and architecture, learn about festival culture, or include a landscape feature as well.

The Museum and the History of the Parish

The permanent exhibition “Antona Rupaiņa istaba un pagasta vēsture” opened at the Bērzgale Local History Museum on November 25, 2016. The title refers to Antons Rupainis’ room and the history of the parish, establishing a clear historical focus. The Antons Rupainis Museum can also be visited outside its official opening hours by arranging a visit in advance by phone or in writing. Another option is a tour of the historic sites of Bērzgale Parish. It lasts 2.5 to 3.5 hours and must be booked through the museum. Confirm the booking details before your trip. This will help you decide whether to focus on the permanent exhibition or plan a longer tour.

The Manor House and St. Anne’s Church

Bērzgale Manor House is a locally significant architectural monument; it was later used as a school. This later use adds another chapter to the building’s history. The Roman Catholic Church of St. Anne offers a different architectural focus: built of stone in 1776, it has a cruciform floor plan and two towers. The choir loft houses an organ with 32 keys, made in Vilnius in 1891. The dates refer to different events—1776 to the construction of the church and 1891 to the making of the organ. At St. Anne’s, you can therefore take in both the exterior design and a precisely dated detail of its furnishings; the manor house, by contrast, combines its importance as an architectural monument with its later use as a school.

St. Anne’s Day and Events

The St. Anne’s Day market has been one of the traditions of Bērzgale Parish since Latvia’s first period of independence. Invited guests, local artisans, craftspeople and potters regularly gathered for St. Anne’s Day. The festival tradition is therefore also connected with local crafts and social gatherings. In addition to St. Anne’s Day, the Bērzgale Parish Cultural Centre organizes national and traditional celebrations, as well as informational, educational and entertainment events for different age groups. If you would like to plan your trip around a specific celebration or event, check the dates in advance.

Lake Micānu as a Cultural Landscape

Lake Micānu lies within the administrative territory of Bērzgale and has two islands. One is a small artificial island created during the period of serfdom. This connects a geographical feature with a specific story of human intervention. Unlike the buildings, where architecture or use takes center stage, the lake offers another perspective on Bērzgale: the connection between landscape and history. Alongside the museum, manor house, church and festival traditions, this theme offers another focus for planning your trip.
