Dunmanway offers different ways to explore local history and tradition: interactive heritage trails, a Sam Maguire experience and the Ballabuidhe Fair each have their own focus. The Town Heritage Walks also offer two distinctly different route lengths. Together with local leisure facilities, they provide a range of options to suit your interests, whether you’re looking for a cultural theme, a particular route length or leisure activities.

Heritage Trails and the Sam Maguire Experience

Stories on the Street is an open-air museum that turns Dunmanway’s historic landmarks into an interactive cultural experience. Two walking routes begin at the central Market Square. Together, the two town trails feature twelve unique plaques. The routes and plaques give the open-air museum its tangible form, linking local history with a walk through Dunmanway.

The Sam Maguire Passport Trail has a different focus. This self-guided route takes you to seven locations, where your passport is stamped at each one. It is free and celebrates Sam Maguire in his hometown of Dunmanway. The trail is considered an entertaining, interactive experience for families, children of all ages and adults; it is also suitable for school, local history and scout groups. The formats differ in both focus and experience: one centres on historic landmarks and plaques, the other on Sam Maguire and seven stamping locations.

Route Lengths and Summit Trail

The Dunmanway Town Heritage Walks offer two clearly distinct distances: Walk 1 is 1.3 kilometres long, while Walk 2 is 7.2 kilometres. Comparing the two by distance, Walk 1 is the shorter option; Walk 2 covers considerably more ground.

North of Dunmanway, the Yew Tree Hill Loop Walk reaches a summit at Mount Gunnery in the surrounding area, at 231 metres above Ordnance Datum. The hill is also known as The Yew Tree Hill. This adds a route with a named summit as another specific point of reference to the town walks.

Ballabuidhe Fair and Horse Racing

The Ballabuidhe Fair is documented in writing as far back as 1615 and still retains the traditional form of a fair. It includes horse racing, horse sales and horse displays. The Ballabuidhe Races feature more than 30 races, including trotting, sulky and flat races for ponies and horses. After three days of racing, the Ballabuidhe Horse Fair takes place in the streets. This longstanding tradition encompasses both the races and the subsequent fair featuring horses.

Local Leisure Facilities

Dunmanway’s local leisure facilities include a public 25-metre swimming pool and an 18-hole pitch-and-putt course. The two facilities offer different types of leisure activity: a pool measuring 25 metres in length and a course described by its 18 holes. Along with the heritage trails and horse tradition, they add to the range of interests you can plan your stay in Dunmanway around.
