If you’re looking for a hotel in Ballycotton, the village’s coastal attractions and maritime history can help you choose your destination. Beaches, rock pools, a cliff walk, boat experiences and the history of sea rescue offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Beaches and the Cliff Walk in Ballycotton

Ballycotton lies on a rocky headland overlooking Ballycotton Bay. The beaches differ in location and character: The Conger is a small beach beside Ballycotton Pier. The Cow is in the centre of the village and is a rocky beach suited to exploring rock pools. So, when comparing these two coastal spots, one centres on the pier and the other on rocks and pools in the middle of the village.

The Ballycotton Cliff Walk runs from the village to Ballyandreen Beach. The cliff path runs between meadows on one side and the sea on the other. The route includes numerous livestock gates, so it is not suitable for bicycles or buggies. Keep this restriction in mind when considering the walk as part of your plans. The route leads to Ballyandreen, while The Conger is beside the pier and The Cow is in the centre of the village.

Ferry Trip, Lighthouse and Boat Excursions

The ticket office for Ballycotton Island Lighthouse Tours is located at the Inn by the Harbour on the pier in Ballycotton. A ten-seat passenger ferry takes visitors to Ballycotton Island and to one of only two black lighthouses in Ireland. Knowledgeable guides accompany visitors up the lighthouse tower to the bright red lantern gallery. From there, you can look out over Ballycotton Bay and beyond. Check the current ferry schedule before making plans.

The Lighthouse Tours go to the island and lighthouse. Ballycotton Sea Adventures also offers boat trips and charter cruises around Ballycotton Bay, along the surrounding scenic coastline and in County Cork. Your choice therefore depends on whether you want to focus on the trip to the island and the lighthouse visit, or choose one of the available excursions and charter trips.

Maritime History

The history of Ballycotton Lifeboat Station is also part of the village’s maritime character. In the station’s nearly 150-year history, its crews received 19 awards for exceptional bravery; the most recent was awarded in 2002. The RNLB Mary Stanford is said to be the only Irish lifeboat to have received a gold medal for a dramatic rescue in February 1936. These details give the history of sea rescue its own place alongside today’s coastal and boating attractions.

More Cultural and Natural Attractions in the Wider Cork Destination

The wider Cork destination includes other distinct cultural and natural attractions. Barryscourt Castle was built between 1392 and 1420 as an Irish tower house. Charles Fort was built between 1677 and 1682 as a military fortress to protect the town and harbour of Kinsale; from its walls and ramparts, you can look out over the harbour. Timoleague Abbey was built in the 13th century on a monastic settlement. These examples differ in form and period: the tower house, military fortress and monastic complex each offer a different historical focus.

Cork’s gardens and landscape attractions also offer a variety of themes. Fota Arboretum covers 11 hectares, where rare, delicate trees and shrubs grow outdoors. Fota’s gardens include an ornamental lake, formal pleasure gardens, an orangery and a sun temple. Ilnacullin is a small island garden in the sheltered coastal harbour of Glengarriff in Bantry Bay, with horticultural and architectural features.

At Mizen Head, visitors can cross the arched bridge. The visitor centre covers the region’s geology and the Fastnet Rescue Tide Clock; access conditions and exhibitions may change. Below the bridge, visitors can look out for seals, kittiwakes, gannets and jackdaws, although sightings are not guaranteed.
