Adrigole stretches for about 9 km along the north-western shore of Bantry Bay, on the south coast of the Beara Peninsula. Its attractions range from wildlife and activities in the harbour to the Beara Way and crafts in the village. When planning your trip, it can therefore help to decide on your main focus first: would you like to hike, spend time on the water or see Irish crafts?

Location and orientation

Adrigole is on the R572, the road between Glengarriff and Castletownbere. For hikers on the Beara Way, the village is roughly halfway between these two places. The Beara Way section from Adrigole to Castletownbere takes about five to six hours. The halfway description refers to the village’s location on the walking route; the time estimate refers to the section mentioned.

Nearby, the Tim Healy Pass crosses the mountains to South Kerry. Adrigole’s shingle beach is at Trafask, about 2.5 miles from the village towards Glengarriff. These places offer different scenic settings for planning a trip: a pass across the mountains and a beach on the coast.

Harbour, kayaking and wildlife

With Kayak With The Seals, you paddle in the sheltered waters of Adrigole Harbour, where seals may follow the kayaks. Adrigole Harbour is home to a colony of more than 30 common seals as well as a few grey seals. Orthon Island in Adrigole Harbour is a nesting site for seabirds, including terns and oystercatchers. The harbour, animals and island each contribute a different aspect of this coastal village.

If you prefer to stay on land, you can walk to Adrigole Harbour and watch the colourful boats passing by. A walk to the harbour and a kayaking trip are two different ways to experience the water and the surrounding area.

Buoyancy aids are provided for the kayaking experience and must be worn. Changing rooms and outdoor showers with fresh water are also available. As these facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit.

Sailing and multi-day experiences

Another activity on the water is offered by the sailing yacht Jessy of Adrigole. The yacht offers five-day liveaboard training courses certified by Irish Sailing. Charter trips on the Jessy of Adrigole are also available for one to 14 days, to explore the wildlife of the Wild Atlantic Way. The experiences therefore differ both in duration and focus: the course lasts five days and is geared towards training, while the charter lasts from one to 14 days and is for exploring the wildlife. Check current dates and availability before booking.

Crafts and local connections

Adrigole Arts (Pure-Ireland) is a craft shop and art gallery in the village of Adrigole. It offers Irish-made products such as jewellery, ceramics, woollen goods and knitwear, glass, leatherwork, woodcraft and art prints. The shop brings crafts and a gallery together in one specific village destination.

Another cultural point of interest nearby is the Leitrim Beg wedge tomb. It is located in a farmer’s field near Adrigole. The shop in the village and the nearby tomb offer two different local points of interest if, alongside the coast, harbour and walking route, you are also interested in crafts and regional history.

When planning your stay, you can consider these interests separately: the Beara Way offers a specifically named walking section with an approximate duration of five to six hours; activities on the water range from a five-day training course to longer charter trips. The harbour, beach and pass round out these options with different coastal and mountain landscapes.
