Timoleague combines a defining historic building with several walking and cycling routes. The routes range from a former railway line to coastal stretches on the Seven Heads Peninsula. This makes it possible to explore the town through its abbey history as well as its varied routes and landscapes.

Timoleague Abbey: History and Architecture

Timoleague Abbey is the town’s defining landmark; the ruins of the Franciscan friary stand on the banks of the Argideen River. The abbey dates from before 1316 and was built in the 13th century on an older monastic settlement founded by St Molaga. It is a state-owned National Monument and is managed by the Office of Public Works.

The Franciscan friary is designed in the English Early Gothic style. The complex includes a long church, a nave, a transept, a cloister and a tower. There is also a bullaun stone and ornate windows. The nave and transept are different parts of the long church; the cloister and tower add to the view of the monastic buildings. Visitors can walk through the original stone structure, and picnic tables are available on site.

Another historic landmark in the town is the present-day Church of the Ascension, built in 1811. Its construction date places it well after the medieval abbey ruins and adds to the picture of Timoleague’s religious architectural history.

Routes Along a Former Railway Line and the Coast

The Timoleague to Courtmacsherry Walk follows a former railway line. There are several picnic spots along the route. It is suitable for families to cycle or walk, offering a route described as suitable for both cycling and walking.

The Argideen Valley Trail runs from Ballinascarthy through Timoleague to Courtmacsherry and is approximately 15 kilometres long. Waymarkers, overview maps and information boards help visitors find their way. The maps and boards supplement the waymarkers as additional navigation aids: they provide an overview of the route, while the waymarkers follow its course.

The Seven Heads Walk loops around the Seven Heads Peninsula, starts in the village of Timoleague and passes through Courtmacsherry and along rugged cliffs and coastal stretches. Its landscape includes rocky coastline, sandy beaches, farmland, villages and woodland; birdlife is also varied. At approximately 42.5 kilometres, the route is considerably longer than the roughly 15-kilometre Argideen Valley Trail. This offers a choice between a shorter route through the Argideen Valley and a longer walk with a distinctive coastal course.
