If you’re looking for a hotel in Molaoi, you can get a sense of the town through its distinctive landscape and history. A common point of reference is the Larnaka Gorge: it runs through Molaoi and begins at the summit of Mount Kourkoula, at an elevation of 916 m. Along its course, you can consider the wooded landscape, the former use of the watercourse and the historic buildings above the gorge together. This makes Molaoi more tangible as a destination beyond its individual sights. Landscape and history are not separate here; they meet around the same gorge.

Landscape and nature of the Larnaka Gorge

Very steep slopes and dense forest cover define the Larnaka Gorge. Its rich flora includes many endemic plants, ornamental shrubs and herbaceous vegetation, as well as aromatic and medicinal plants. Forest fruit trees and various species of mushroom also form part of the landscape. The range therefore encompasses different types of plants as well as fungi. The gorge and the Kourkoula area are a bird sanctuary. Alongside the description of the slopes and forest, the diverse vegetation and protected-area status are among Molaoi’s defining natural features.

The hiking section and the former course of the gorge

For hikers, the Larnaka Gorge trail begins at the old town hall in the centre of Molaoi. Check local conditions before setting out. Only the section from the town centre towards the mountain is considered visible and intact; this part is regarded as a place for recreation, tranquillity and experiencing nature. The rest of the section, which once divided the town, is covered from the town centre to the plain and has become a road as far as Molaoi Hospital. The area for recreation and experiencing nature is therefore the part heading towards the mountain; the former passage through the town is markedly different.

Mills and Paliopyrgos: traces of local history

Once, eleven watermills operated along the course of the Larnaka Gorge near Molaoi. The last ceased operation in the 1970s. The number of mills illustrates the former use of the watercourse and gives the history of the gorge a tangible point of reference.

Paliopyrgos of Molaoi stands on a rock above the Larnaka Gorge. This small fortified structure is attributed either to the Byzantine or the Turkish period. At various times, it served as a lookout post from which to monitor the plain of Molaoi. Two distinct historical perspectives thus sit side by side: the use of the watercourse by the mills and the monitoring of the plain from Paliopyrgos.

Agia Paraskevi and the feast day

Agia Paraskevi is the patron saint of Molaoi. Pilgrims come from all over the world for her feast day on 26 July. This religious connection adds a clearly dated cultural occasion to the town’s landscape and architectural themes.
