Mavrovouni brings together a beach, a hilltop settlement and historic buildings, along with seasonal visitor information and details about sea turtle nests. To help you decide whether to visit, consider three questions: When is the seasonal offering available, how are the beach and the main settlement positioned in relation to each other, and what area does the nature-related information cover?

The seasonal station at the beach

Every summer, from June to September, ARCHELON operates a seasonal outdoor information station at Mavrovouni Beach. This period gives you a specific reference point if you want to coordinate your travel dates with the information on offer. It describes a recurring season, not a one-off event date. If you plan to visit the station, check the schedule in advance; the months listed provide a clear timeframe.

Sea turtles and several beaches

According to ARCHELON, the beaches of Mavrovouni, Valtaki, Selinitsa and Vathi in the western part of the bay, together with Evrotas Beach, which is 15 kilometres long, host an average of 200 sea turtle nests per year. The 15-kilometre figure refers to Evrotas Beach; the nest count, by contrast, covers all the beaches listed. The figures also use different timeframes: June to September refers to the information station’s season, while the nest count is an annual average. As an average, the figure represents nest numbers over several years; it should not be read as a specific number for every individual year.

Main settlement, castle and church

The main settlement of Mavrovouni lies on the hill above the beach. At the highest point stands the small Goula Castle, also known as Goulades or Beanika; the Church of the Three Hierarchs is nearby. The names Goula, Goulades and Beanika refer to the same castle, while the church is a separate nearby landmark. Two relationships are useful for orientation: the settlement lies above the beach, and the church is near the castle. This helps distinguish the settlement’s location from the proximity of the two buildings.

The castle is in ruins, but two towers and the vaulted gateway remain intact. The overall condition of the complex therefore differs from that of the specific surviving features. A vaulted gateway is a passage with an arched opening; mentioning it adds a specific architectural feature alongside the two towers. For architecture enthusiasts, the vaulted gateway is a particular point of interest.

This gives you three points of comparison when choosing a destination: season, location and connection to nature. First, consider which aspect will most influence your travel decision. The station’s operating period helps with choosing your dates, the hill and castle references help with spatial orientation, and the nest information helps explain the wider beach context.
