Elafonisos combines distinctive coastal landscapes with natural and historical attractions. When planning your trip, it helps not to lump the places mentioned together as a single beach destination: Panagia and Simos differ in location and form, while Pavlopetri is a sunken settlement with its own archaeological significance. If you are looking for a hotel in Elafonisos, these differences can help you decide what to focus on during your stay—beaches, nature or culture.

Beaches and landscapes on Elafonisos

On the western side of Elafonisos, Panagia Beach lies in the Kato Nisi area, opposite the coast of Mani. It is a large sandy beach with deep blue water. Rare dunes and a forest of sea cedars line the coast. In winter, the small seasonal Limnitsa Lagoon forms on the beach. The beach, dunes, cedar forest and lagoon give Panagia several distinct landscape features, including a natural feature that is explicitly tied to the winter season.

Simos Beach is divided by the Sarakiniko peninsula into two natural bays: Megali Paralia (Sarakiniko) and Mikri Paralia (Frangos). The names therefore refer to two bays within Simos Beach. The waters in Fragkos Bay are shallow and sheltered from waves, making it easy and safe to access the sea and easier to swim. Simos is about five kilometres, or around ten minutes by car, from the main settlement. Both figures are approximate and may vary depending on conditions.

The Elafonisos area is designated as a Natura 2000 Site of Community Importance (GR2540002). Key features on which this protection is based include dunes and endemic plant species found only on the beaches and in the wider Elafonisos area. Strongyli Lagoon is also registered as a wetland. If you want to understand the island’s natural features, these provide specific points of reference: dunes, distinctive plants and wetlands complement the picture of its beaches.

Pavlopetri and the history of the island

The sunken prehistoric settlement of Pavlopetri lies underwater between Pounta Beach and Pavlopetri Island, about 600 metres north-northeast of the port of Elafonisos. The distance is measured from the port and is an approximate guide. Pavlopetri is a rare prehistoric city with a settlement plan comprising buildings, streets and squares. It is one of the oldest sunken cities in the world; evidence of organised settlement there dates back to the 4th millennium BC. Further research may refine its archaeological interpretation. Pavlopetri thus offers a historical focus distinct from the coastal landscape.

Religious buildings are also among the island’s notable features. The Chapel of Agios Patapios is located in the Aglyftis area, at the westernmost point of Elafonisos. Agios Spyridon is considered the island’s only historical religious monument. These two details refer to different places and should not be conflated as if they were in the same location.

Planning your trip and dates

The ferry crossing from Pounta and Ypostego to Elafonisos takes nine minutes. As schedules and operating conditions may vary, check the timetable for your travel date. For getting around the island, the road connection to Simos provides another specific point of reference: the beach is about five kilometres, or around ten minutes by car, from the main settlement. These approximate figures help you gauge the journey but are no substitute for checking up-to-date travel times.

The Elafonisos Run starts at the port and ends at Simos Beach; the stated date is in June. A festival in honour of Elafonisos’s patron saint, Agios Spyridon, is listed for 12 December. If you are planning your trip around either event, check the dates for the year you wish to travel. This lets you take seasonal natural features, the ferry crossing and possible event dates into account as separate aspects of your trip planning.
