Velonades can be discovered through its culture, landscape and nearby beaches. The cultural association and its neoclassical cultural center are at the heart of the village; an old olive mill has been preserved in Livadi, a settlement in Velonades. The lush green surroundings add to the area’s appeal. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Corfu, these local features can help you get a sense of the place. Museums and historical sights in Corfu Town are part of the wider destination and form a separate element of your trip planning.

Cultural Association and Cultural Center in Velonades

Since 2010, the Velonades Cultural Association has been based in the cultural center of the local community of Velonades. The building is neoclassical. The association has set up a traveling library and a photo exhibition; its adult choir, “Χορωδία ενηλίκων Πολιτιστικού Συλλόγου Βελονάδων,” has 30 choir members. These bring together different forms of community activity: reading, photography and choral singing, alongside the architectural character of the cultural center.

This offers two perspectives on local culture: the neoclassical building and the association’s activities. If you include culture in your trip planning, you can consider these aspects alongside your interest in the landscape and nearby coast.

Green Surroundings, Beaches and the Olive Mill in Livadi

Velonades is set amid lush greenery. The beaches of Peroulades, Saint George and Sidari are nearby. You can weigh up culture in the village and a nearby beach visit as different interests when choosing your destination.

Livadi offers another connection to local history. An old olive mill dating from 1900 has been preserved there, along with tools from that period and large stone millstones. The millstones were used to crush olives; together, the tools and stones illustrate how the mill worked. If you plan to visit the mill, check access in advance.

Corfu as a Wider Destination

The Old Town of Corfu has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This cultural and historical focus is distinct from the association’s work in Velonades and offers another perspective on Corfu.

The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town holds more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. The Archaeological Museum displays the Gorgoneion pediment of the great Temple of Artemis. It was created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Monastery of Aghioi Theodoroi. The two museums have different focuses: one brings together objects from several regions of Asia, while the other displays a significant archaeological work from Corfu.

A digital guide to the Old Town, described in 2023, is aimed at residents and visitors and offers high-quality audiovisual material on more than 80 sights. Before your trip, check whether the guide is available. The Museum of Asian Art can be reached from Corfu Port on bus route 2, which runs between Mantouki and Kanoni; check the timetable before you travel. This keeps the information about Corfu Town as a separate part of your planning alongside the local features of Velonades.
