Kalami on Corfu’s Kalami Bay combines a historic house with different ways to experience the bay. Boat trips can include stops by the sea, as well as opportunities to swim or snorkel; guided hikes follow old paths. This gives you a sense of the area’s local focus on both the water and hiking.

Kalami: History and Activities in the Bay

Kalami Bay has earned a reputation as one of the most attractive holiday destinations on Corfu. The White House has stood in the bay on the island’s northeast coast for well over 100 years. The house is a point of reference in Kalami: visits featuring Durrell memorabilia take place here, and the guided hikes start and end here.

Visits to The White House are available on selected dates. You can see memorabilia relating to the Durrell family and the rooms where Lawrence Durrell lived. If you plan a visit, check current availability with the operator. Plan around the dates on offer rather than assuming access is available at any time.

The White House Experience offers four guided hikes along old paths. They all start and end at The White House in Kalami Bay. This makes their shared starting and ending point clear: the tours link the paths with the house as a point of reference. Check the provider for current hike availability if you would like to include one in your trip.

On boat trips in Kalami Bay, you can stop at one of the many seaside tavernas, gift shops or markets. Swimming or snorkelling is also possible along the way. Possible stops therefore include both places on the shore and activities in the water. Boat trips and hikes offer different experiences: the bay from the water or old paths on foot.

Corfu: Old Town, Museums and Other Trails

As a broader travel destination, Corfu also offers historical and cultural attractions beyond Kalami. Corfu Old Town has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Together with the two fortresses, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This urban focus complements the bay with a distinct chapter in the island’s history.

The Museum of Asian Art in Corfu Old Town houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. Its collection offers a different thematic perspective from the Durrell memorabilia at The White House. The Archaeological Museum of Corfu displays the Gorgon Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis. The pediment was created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Aghioi Theodoroi Monastery. The museum was built primarily to display it.

Bus route 2 on the Mantouki–Kanoni route is listed for travel from Corfu port to the Museum of Asian Art. Check the timetable before you travel. Another hiking perspective on Corfu can be found in the municipal unit of Achilleion: ancient paths there wind through the forested mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros and Garouna and are suitable for hiking. These paths offer a distinct landscape and hiking focus within the wider destination of Corfu.
