Boukaris is a small, traditional fishing village on the southeast coast. Its peaceful harbour, with fishing boats and fish tavernas by the sea, defines the character of the village. Boukaris is considered a place to relax, not a holiday resort with a lively nightlife.

Harbour, jetties and fishing

Fishing boats lie in the peaceful harbour. The Boukaris area also has numerous small wooden jetties where fishing boats can moor. Both the harbour and the smaller landing places are therefore part of the coastal scene.

Fish tavernas and seaside cuisine

One specific example of seaside cuisine is the family-run fish restaurant Boukari Beach. It is by the sea in the traditional fishing village of Boukari, 23 km from Corfu Town. Lobster spaghetti is served, and guests can choose a lobster from the aquarium. At Boukaris tavernas, guests are also encouraged to choose their own fish from the kitchen, which is then prepared for them. Meat eaters are welcome too.

The selection process may vary depending on the restaurant and menu. Check what is specifically on offer if you have a particular dish in mind.

Walking and nearby villages

From the small village of Kouspades on the hill above Boukari harbour, you can walk to Petriti. Petriti is the largest fishing harbour on the southeast coast. This provides a walking route from a village above the harbour to another fishing harbour on the coast.

The nearby village of Chlomos has narrow, paved lanes and views over the southern part of Corfu; from the bay at Boukari, by contrast, the view extends towards Corfu Town and beyond. The two places therefore offer different vantage points for views of the island.

Corfu: Old Town and museums

In the wider destination of Corfu, the Old Town offers a different focus from the fishing village of Boukaris. Its historic urban fabric has been almost completely preserved; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. For travellers choosing what to focus on, the village harbour and tavernas thus contrast with a historic cityscape.

The Museum of Asian Art in Corfu Old Town houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. From Corfu harbour, the museum can be reached on bus route 2 on the Mantouki–Kanoni route. Check the timetable before travelling.

A digital guide to the Old Town described in 2023 offered residents and visitors information, including high-quality audiovisual material, on more than 80 sights. Check whether the guide is available before using it.

The Archaeological Museum of Corfu was built primarily to exhibit the Gorgoneion Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis. The pediment was created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Aghioi Theodoroi Monastery.
