If you are considering Gaios as a destination for a hotel stay, its local history offers concrete points of interest: the Folklore Museum, with collection items from various periods; the historic water supply system; and a monument at the harbor entrance. These topics offer different perspectives on Gaios—from the history of an institution to structures and objects in the town.

The Folklore Museum and its history

The Folklore Museum was founded in 1996 by the Cultural Association of Paxos. It is housed in the neoclassical building of the old primary school in Gaios. The school building dates from 1906 and was made available to the association by the municipal administration for this purpose. The founding year and the construction year thus mark two different stages: the history of the building and the museum’s later establishment.

The aim of its founding was to preserve the island’s cultural heritage and create a focal point for its future development. This institutional background adds to the perspective on the collection: the museum links its own origins with objects that touch on different periods and aspects of life.

From early periods to domestic life

The first room contains fossils and prehistoric tools, as well as classical amphorae. There are also weapons from the Venetian period and later, coins from various periods, and tools. The selection spans a broad period rather than focusing on a single era. Fossils, amphorae, weapons, and coins each offer a different point of reference for understanding the collection’s diverse historical themes.

Other items turn the focus to clothing and personal belongings: clothing and underwear are on display, along with a 400-year-old bedstead with mattresses, a cradle, and other women’s accessories. The stated age of the bedstead provides a specific point of reference in time; the clothing, cradle, and accessories add objects from domestic life to the collection.

One room is set up as a historic kitchen. On display there are oil lamps, clay plates, hanging scales, oil containers, and brassware. This collection differs thematically from the finds and weapons in the first room, giving everyday objects their own focus. In the museum courtyard, parts of old olive presses, oil measuring vessels, and stone objects are on display.

Another room serves as a Municipal Art Gallery. It displays one of the rare original copies of a work about Paxos, written by Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria in the late 19th century. The room thus combines its gallery function with a specific connection to the island and a historical author.

Water supply and harbor entrance

Gaios’s water supply system was built in the 19th century during the British occupation. It is considered the most significant water supply system on the entire island. Alongside the museum collection, the history of water supply is therefore also part of the town’s history. A 2.5-meter-high bronze statue of Georgios Anemogiannis also stands at the entrance to Gaios harbor. Its material, height, and location clearly identify the monument, without requiring a visit to the museum.

Islets and visiting conditions

The islets of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia lie opposite the harbor of Gaios. They are freely accessible during the day. Access to the interior of Saint Nicholas Castle is a separate matter: prior permission from the municipality is required. The site is not open permanently and has no fixed visiting hours. Contact the municipality in advance to ask about access to the castle interior. If you are also planning a visit to the Folklore Museum, check visiting options before your trip.
