Vatos in Corfu can be described through specific routes and landscape features. The Corfu Trail passes through Vátos; there, the terrain becomes flatter and the trail crosses the Ropa Valley.

Vátos and the Routes in Corfu

The Corfu Trail is 180 kilometres long in total and passes through several settlements. Benitses is one of the Corfu Trail’s 13 overnight stops. In Vátos, the trail crosses the Ropa Valley; there, the terrain becomes flatter.

A route through the wider surrounding region runs from Pelekas via the Kaiser’s Throne viewpoint to Myrtiotissa Beach and the monastery of the same name. From there, it continues to Vátos and the Theotoky Winery, ending in Giannades. Vátos is therefore one stop on a route that includes several named places and destinations; the route is not limited to the village.

The walkability of the surrounding area is also relevant when planning: Ermones, Glyfada and Myrtiotissa are considered too far from Vátos to reach comfortably on foot. Another geographical reference point is that Vátos is the settlement closest to the Corfu Golf Club.

Corfu Town: Old Town and Museums

Corfu Town offers a different focus within the broader destination of Corfu. The Old Town has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Together with the two fortresses, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A digital guide to the Old Town is aimed at residents and visitors and offers high-quality audiovisual material about more than 80 sights. Check its availability before your trip.

The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. You can reach the Museum of Asian Art from the port on bus line 2, which runs between Mantouki and Kanoni; check the timetable before your trip. The Archaeological Museum of Corfu displays the Gorgon-Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis. The pediment was created in 585 BC and excavated near the Monastery of Aghioi Theodoroi in 1911. The museum was built primarily to house it.
