Argyrades: Location and Village Character

If you are looking for a hotel in Argyrades, you can consider the village itself and nearby destinations as separate points of reference. Argyrades lies between three green hills on a natural elevation that provides natural shelter. Old, dilapidated buildings and houses stand in one part of the village; the elevated setting is a distinct landscape feature. The village character and the topography thus emerge as two different facets.

One beach in the surrounding area is Agios Georgios. Located near Argyrades, this sandy beach lies between the beaches of Issos and Marathias. Another natural feature is Lake Korission in the nearby coastal area. It is considered Corfu’s most important wetland and covers 6,000 stremmata. Agios Georgios and Lake Korission therefore represent different landscape themes: a sandy beach and an extensive wetland.

Corfu Old Town and Museums

Corfu Old Town has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric. Its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries; the Old Town and its two fortresses are UNESCO World Heritage sites. A digital guide described in 2023 offers residents and visitors information on more than 80 attractions within the city, supplemented by high-quality audiovisual material. Check whether the guide is available before your trip.

The museums cover different subjects. The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. The Archaeological Museum of Corfu was built primarily to display the pediment featuring a Gorgon depiction from the great Temple of Artemis. The pediment was created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Monastery of Aghioi Theodoroi. Casa Parlante recreates everyday life among the island’s aristocracy in the 19th century, with animated figures and replicas of furnishings and décor, in the historic Old Town.

The Kapodistrias Museum offers another perspective on history: through significant artefacts and documents, its permanent exhibition explores the history of Corfu, Europe and Greece through the life of Greece’s first governor. The lush garden on the hill by the museum offers views of Corfu’s landscape and across the island. The Achilleion focuses on a different subject: the summer palace was built in Gastouri in 1892 in the Pompeian style.
