If you are looking for a hotel in Corfu, you can consider Potamos as a destination in its own right: today, the large village is a suburb of Corfu Town, which is four kilometres away. Potamos offers a different perspective from Corfu Town’s urban cultural attractions: agricultural land, preserved mansions and the history of the Church of Agia Eleousa shape the themes described here. This can help you choose a location based on your interests before comparing specific accommodation options.

Village and Landscape in Potamos

A river that runs through the Potamos area gave the place its name. At the same time, Potamos is predominantly characterised by agricultural land. Near Alykes, the village extends to the sea. Together, these features describe both land use and the extent of the village: Potamos is defined not only by its buildings, but also has a distinct agricultural character and a connection to the sea at Alykes. If you would like to consider the landscape as well as historic buildings when choosing a location, these are two different aspects of the village.

Mansions and Agia Eleousa

Many mansions have been preserved in Potamos, including some dating from the 16th century. They give the place an architectural history that can be traced back to the early modern period. The Church of Agia Eleousa stands on a hill. It was built in 1562, completely destroyed in 1943 and subsequently rebuilt from the ground up. Its building history therefore comprises clearly distinct stages: construction, destruction and reconstruction.

Commemoration and Procession

At 8 a.m. on 13 September, the church bells ring in Potamos in mourning for the destruction of the bell tower of Agia Eleousa by a German aircraft in 1943. A round stone in the churchyard marks the site of the former bell tower. This annual commemoration thus connects a specific date with a visible memorial. If you would like to travel specifically to attend the commemoration, check the date for the relevant year in advance.

Another religious occasion is the recurring procession of Panagia Dimosiana. In the afternoon, it returns to Potamos and passes through the village. The commemoration on 13 September and the procession are different religious events: one relates to the destruction of the bell tower, while the other is a procession through Potamos. If you are planning specifically to attend the procession, check the dates before travelling.

Corfu Town as a Distinct Cultural Setting

In Corfu, the Old Town of Corfu offers an urban focus that differs from Potamos’ village setting. Its historic urban fabric has been almost entirely preserved; the buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can therefore choose between Potamos’ village history and Corfu Town’s historic urban fabric as different cultural themes.

The museums in the Old Town also have their own distinct focuses. The Museum of Asian Art contains more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. The Archaeological Museum of Corfu displays the Gorgon Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis. The pediment was created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Monastery of Aghioi Theodoroi. The museum was built primarily to display it.

A digital guide to the Old Town of Corfu is intended for residents and visitors and provides audiovisual information about more than 80 points of interest. The guide’s description dates from 2023; check its availability before your trip. For travel to the Museum of Asian Art, visitor information lists a connection from Corfu Port on bus route 2, on the Mantouki–Kanoni route. Check the timetable before travelling.
