Getting to Know Alepou as a Place to Stay

If you are considering Alepou as a location for your accommodation, two published bus routes offer specific guidance. Bus route 8 between San Rocco Square and Aqualand passes through Alepou, as does route 11 between San Rocco Square and Pelekas. The routes differ in their respective destinations. If one of these routes is important to your plans, check the current service details before travelling.

The area’s history also gives Alepou its own character: written sources refer to the place as a Borgo, or suburb, as early as the 16th century. A notable historical landmark is the Chimarious–Grimma Mansion. It stands in a prominent position on Alepou’s central hill, above the Church of Agia Paraskevi. The area’s description thus brings together a historical designation and a mansion with a specific location.

Corfu in the Wider Travel Itinerary

The wider destination of Corfu offers further cultural and landscape-related themes to explore when planning your trip. Corfu’s Old Town has retained almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. A digital guide to the Old Town is intended for residents and visitors and offers high-quality audiovisual material on more than 80 sights. Check whether the guide is available before your trip.

In Corfu’s Old Town, the Museum of Asian Art’s collection comprises more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas, and Central Asia. Bus route 2 runs from the port of Corfu to the museum along the Mantouki–Kanoni route; check the timetables before travelling. The collection offers a different perspective on the city from its historic urban fabric, focusing on the diversity of the regions represented.

The history of the museums themselves is also a subject of interest. The Archaeological Museum of Corfu was built primarily to display the Gorgon Medusa pediment from the Great Temple of Artemis. The pediment was created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Monastery of Aghioi Theodoroi. In the historic Old Town, Casa Parlante recreates the daily life of the island’s aristocracy in the 19th century using moving figures and reproduced furnishings and décor. In Gastouri, the Achilleion summer palace was built in 1892 in the Pompeian style.

The Kapodistrias Museum offers another historical perspective: its permanent exhibition explores the history of Corfu, Europe, and Greece through the life of Greece’s first governor, using significant artefacts and documents. The cultural themes therefore range from archaeological objects and urban history to the biography of a statesman.

For outdoor activities, ancient paths in the municipal unit of Achilleion wind through the forested mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros, and Garouna and are suitable for hiking. Another option for hikers is the 180-kilometre Corfu Trail, which passes through several settlements; Benitses is one of its 13 daily stages. Both details convey a sense of different scales: from mountain paths to a route connecting several settlements.
