Agios Gordios combines a long sandy beach with a green mountain landscape. When searching for a hotel, you can weigh whether the beach or the hills above the village are also important for your trip. The surrounding area also includes the traditional village of Kato Garounas, opportunities for walks in the mountains and historical points of interest on the beach. These different aspects give the area more than a single focus.

Beach and Coastal Scenery

Agios Gordios beach, together with smaller neighbouring coves, forms an almost continuous 2.5-kilometre stretch. Steep cliffs rise behind the shore; the distinctive Ortholithi rock juts out of the sea. The beach is fully developed. Its shallow water is suitable for swimming, although conditions on the beach can vary. If you want to give equal weight to the beach and the landscape, you will find different features to consider when choosing an area: sandy beach and coves by the water, as well as cliffs behind the shore.

Green Hillsides and Activities

Agios Gordios lies at the foot of a green mountain and is surrounded by olive trees and vineyards. In the hills above is Kato Garounas, a traditional village on the mountainside that dominates the landscape. From there, a road descends to Agios Gordios beach. The coastline and the village in the hillside landscape therefore offer different points of interest. The green mountain is ideal for long walks. If you want to explore the area on foot, you can make this a distinct focus of your trip planning.

The 370-metre-high mountain summit also offers a special activity: flying enthusiasts can take off from the summit in a Maistros, a northwesterly wind, and sea breezes, and land on Agios Gordios beach. Unlike a mountain walk, this flight takes you from the summit to the coast. Both activities make use of the mountain landscape, but they differ considerably in nature.

Historical Points of Interest on the Beach

To the west of the beach is the rock of Aerostato, formerly also known as Vardia. In the past, it served as a lookout point for observing pirate movements along the west coast. The church of Agios Gordios stands right by the sea in the middle of the beach. The rock’s former function connects it to the history of the coast; the church is a building directly on the shore.

Corfu: Old Town and Museum

In the wider destination of Corfu, the Old Town offers its own urban cultural interest. Its historic urban fabric is almost entirely preserved; the buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also in the Old Town, the Museum of Asian Art houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. Corfu therefore brings together historic urban structure and a diverse collection as distinct cultural themes; they form a separate aspect of the wider destination.
