Pagkalochori in Crete offers a local focus for trip planning, with churches, chapels, and local history. The village has several different religious buildings; a memorial stands to the southeast. Another nearby destination is the Arsani Monastery, halfway between Pagkalochori and Sfakaki. For broader cultural planning, Rethymno is a separate point of reference as a wider travel destination.

Churches, Chapels, and Local History

The parish church of Pagkalochori is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. The village is also home to the chapel of Agia Triada. The chapel of Agios Nikolaos has been rebuilt. These buildings stand alongside two distinct sites dedicated to Saint John the Forerunner: the old, ruined church of Saint John and a separate, also ruined chapel dedicated to the same saint. The church and chapel are separate buildings; their shared dedication does not make them a single site.

Another religious site in Pagkalochori is a Sikh temple. A statue of the goddess Artemis was also found during work on a house's foundations in the village. This discovery is a separate historical point of interest alongside the religious buildings. Southeast of Pagkalochori is a memorial to those executed by the Germans. It has a different focus from the churches and chapels: it commemorates those who were executed.

Nearby and Surrounding Area

The Arsani Monastery lies halfway between Pagkalochori and Sfakaki and is described as worth visiting. It is therefore a separate destination nearby, not one of the religious buildings in the village. In the wider area around Pagkalochori, olive oil, fruit, and vegetables are among the main products; wine is also produced there in small quantities. These products give the region an agricultural character.

Rethymno as a Wider Travel Destination

Rethymno's cultural offerings range from city history to museums. The Old Town of Rethymno is designated as a protected historic monument and a traditional settlement. Its urban layout took shape during the Venetian period and was later altered under Turkish rule. The historic city center lies below the Venetian fortress of Fortezza.

Since 1991, the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno has been housed in a pentagonal building in front of the main entrance to the Fortezza. Its exhibitions present the history of the prefecture from the Neolithic period through Roman times. The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno has a different focus: housed in a Venetian mansion dating from the 17th century, it presents traditional crafts and folk art in five permanent exhibition rooms. The Military Museum of Chromonastiri has a room about the historic Battle of Crete; the museum also displays weapons dating from the Greek Revolution of 1821 through the Second World War.

The coast is also part of the wider Rethymno area. Rethymno Beach is 12 kilometers long: it starts at the historic city center and stretches east to Scaleta. Its sand is fine-grained and light brown. For a different kind of event, Rethymno hosts the Renaissance Festival every summer, with music, theater, and dance performances as well as art exhibitions. At carnival time, a group of volunteers organizes a parade each year. If events are important for your travel dates, check the specific dates and current program.
