Garazo: Museums and Village History
Accommodation in Garazo
Garazo brings together village history and several distinct cultural and landscape themes. The Municipality of Mylopotamos lists the village as a traditional settlement. During your stay, you can explore the historical accounts of the Cretan uprisings, the museums’ collections, and the connections to agriculture and the surrounding area as separate points of interest. This gives you an overview of the themes rooted in the village and those related to its surroundings.
History and Church
The leaders of the Cretan uprisings repeatedly gathered in Garazo to make important decisions. These meetings connect the village to Crete’s political history, offering a different perspective from the everyday and craft history represented in the museums. The Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos is also in the village. Its interior is painted, adding sacred architecture to the local historical themes.
Museums and Collections
Garazo has had three museums since 2010: the Folklore Museum, the Museum of Olives and Olive Oil, and the Museum of Greek Utility Ceramics. Their themes range from everyday history and traditional occupations to olives and olive oil, as well as utility ceramics. Opening hours are available on request, so arrange your museum visit in advance.
The Folklore Museum displays household items, tools from traditional occupations, woven work, looms, and photographs documenting social life in Garazo up to the mid-20th century. The collection brings together objects from domestic life and work with textiles and photographs. Its historical timeframe makes changes in social life up to the middle of the century a central theme.
The Museum of Olives and Olive Oil focuses specifically on olives and olive oil. The Museum of Greek Utility Ceramics preserves ceramics made in Garazo during “Ceramic Days” in 2005 and fired in a traditional kiln. The occasion, location, and firing method link the pieces to a specific event and production process. The museums therefore differ not only in name but also in subject matter: social life, olives and olive oil, and ceramics.
Agriculture and Local Culture
Agriculture is another local focus. Within Mylopotamos, Garazo is a leading producer of citrons. This agricultural specialty adds a connection to a specific cultivated plant to the village’s cultural themes. The multi-day Pancretan Citrus Festival is also associated with Garazo. If the festival is important to your travel plans, check the specific event dates in advance.
The Surrounding Area
The Forest of Panagia is near Kato Vrisi Garazo, in the area surrounding the village. Also nearby, a mountain hike to Mount Kouloukonas can begin at the parking area where you leave your car. These offer two different ways to experience the landscape: a named forest and a starting point for a mountain hike.
