Agios Pavlos: Beach, Dunes and Rocky Coastline
Accommodation in Agios Pavlos
Beach and Bay
Agios Pavlos is a coastal settlement where the beach and bay shape the first impression. The beach in front of the settlement is sheltered from the wind and combines deep green water with sand and smooth, flat rocks in the sea. The central beach lies in an enclosed, sheltered bay with clear, deep water and fine pebbles; it serves as the beach area for the settlement of the same name. When describing the coastal landscape, you can consider water color, water depth and shoreline material as distinct features.
Rocks and Dunes
Right next to the central beach are the folded rock layers of Apoplystra and the Yoga Rocks. At Cape Melissa, large vertical cliffs feature geological formations created by wind and sea erosion. The folded layers beside the central beach and the vertical cliffs at the cape present two clearly distinct rock formations. If you are interested in geology, you can describe the difference directly: folded layers at the beach and rocks shaped by wind and sea at the cape.
In the immediate surroundings of the destination, the Agios Pavlos dunes lie beside Cape Melissa and behind a sheltered harbor. The surrounding dunes reach heights of up to 30 meters. Near the dunes is a sandy beach with clear water; its seabed is suitable for exploration. Sea caves are located roughly halfway along this beach. At the coastal stretch at the end of the road from Sachtouria, several sandy beaches follow one another, characterized by large dunes, sea caves and bright blue water. Deep green water in front of the settlement, clear water by the dunes and bright blue water along the stretch of beaches give the coastal areas distinct visual characteristics. The scale also differs: in front of the settlement, the focus is on one beach, while the coastal stretch from Sachtouria consists of a series of several beaches.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
The coastal settlement of Agios Pavlos can be reached via a paved road from Sachtouria. Check local conditions before setting out. West of the beach in front of the settlement, a steep wooden staircase leads to Cape Melissa. The road leads to the settlement, while the staircase connects the beach to the cape; this makes it possible to consider the route there and the described coastal connection separately.
