Stathmos Mourion: Monument, Museum and Hiking Trail
Accommodation in Stathmos Mourion
Stathmos Mourion offers several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: a war memorial at Mouries Station, the Folklore Museum of Ano Sourmenoi in Mouries Station, and a hiking trail to the nearby Waterfall of Beles. Remembrance, everyday Pontian culture and a hike each offer a different focus. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these interests you would like to prioritize during your stay.
Remembrance at Mouries Station
The simple, unadorned war memorial at Mouries Station commemorates around a thousand fighters from Crete who lost their lives in the Battle of Doiran. It consists of a white marble stele on a raised, masonry plinth with several steps. The front of the stele bears a relief laurel wreath made of two branches. The restrained design and the memorial’s significance give it two distinct aspects: its form and its commemorative purpose.
Pontian Folklore and Everyday Life
The Folklore Museum of Ano Sourmenoi is located in Mouries Station and was founded by the Association of Pontians of Ano Souremeni. Its exhibits cover the history and traditions of the Pontians. They include traditional costumes, household items, tools, photographs and documents that illustrate the everyday life and culture of the Pontians in the region. Everyday objects are displayed alongside visual and written materials, offering different ways to explore the subject. If you plan to visit the museum, check in advance what visitor options are currently available.
Hiking Trail to the Waterfall of Beles
A hiking trail to the Waterfall of Beles starts at Mouries Station. North of the station, the nearby waterfall drops around 18 metres. It is also known as Mouries Waterfall or Belas Waterfall. The trail to the waterfall is about 700 metres long and is paved with stone for most of its length. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Nature and Culture in Kilkis
The wider destination of Kilkis also offers Lake Doirani as a natural area. This wetland provides a habitat or stopover for numerous resident and migratory birds; reeds and shoreline vegetation shape the area. From the village of Doirani, visitors can follow the lakeside path to the Forest of a Thousand Trees. The Forest of Mouries, also known as Chilia Dendra or the Forest of a Thousand Trees, lies northeast of the lake in the municipal unit of Mouries. It is designated a natural monument and covers 590 stremmata.
The Lake Doirani Museum is also part of Kilkis’s cultural offering. It is open daily from 08:00 to 14:00 for visits and tours by school groups, and is also available to residents and visitors to the municipality. If you plan a visit, confirm the opening hours before you travel.
