A commemorative race in Eptálofos

A distinctive cultural connection to Eptálofos is the road race held there in 2018. It was part of the annual commemorative and tribute events organised by Akrites Eptalofou Kilkis for the 353,000 Greeks from Pontus who were killed in the massacre. The race was therefore not just a sporting occasion, but also connected with commemorating and honouring this group.

A 5-kilometre race was announced for 17 June 2018. It was due to start at 10:45 a.m. in Eptálofos’s central village square and follow village roads that were entirely paved. The announced route also passed the Zoodochos Pigi Chapel. The starting point, distance and route provide a concrete picture of that event at the time; they are not current route or access information.

A photo exhibition on the history of the village was also announced for the same race, at Eptálofos’s spiritual centre, where visitors could view it. This past offering adds local history to the sporting perspective. The distinction in timing is important for planning a trip: the race and photo exhibition were part of the 2018 programme; the commemorative and tribute events of which the race was a part were held annually. Check a current programme for the date of any upcoming event.

In the wider Kilkis travel destination

In the wider Kilkis travel destination, Lake Doirani offers a scenic view. It is a wetland that provides a habitat or stopover for many resident and migratory birds. Dense reed beds and vegetation along the shore define the surrounding landscape. The Lake Doirani Museum is also a visitor attraction: it is open for visits every day from 08:00 to 14:00. Guided tours are available for school groups, and the museum is also open to residents and visitors to the municipality. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Visitors can follow the lakeside path from the village of Doirani to the Forest of a Thousand Trees. The Mouries Forest, also known as the Forest of a Thousand Trees, is designated a natural monument and covers 590 stremmata. In Kilkis, visitors can therefore choose between distinct landscape experiences: the wetland at Lake Doirani, a named lakeside path and a designated natural monument.

Pikrolimni and its seasonal features

Pikrolimni is a shallow lake beside the village of the same name, and it usually dries up in summer. Its clay soil contains sulphur compounds and nitrates, and is said to have healing and cosmetic properties. In contrast to Lake Doirani, a wetland characterised by birdlife and shoreline vegetation, Pikrolimni stands out for its combination of shallow water, summer drying and the nature of its clay soil.
