Goumenissa offers several distinct ways to plan a stay: historic sites in the townscape, the Panagia Goumenissa Monastery, the Wine Route and waterside walking paths. Depending on your interests, you can explore history and culture, learn about the town’s wine or make time for the outdoors. The following topics show how these options differ and what visiting conditions matter at specific stops.

Squares, Monuments and History

The French Fountain stands in Goumenissa’s central square. It was built in 1918 on the site of an older fountain and commemorates the French presence in the town and the surrounding area. A route offers the chance to explore the town’s lanes, squares and significant monuments. This presents a single structure and a broader view of the townscape as two ways to explore Goumenissa’s history.

The Old School is also part of the town’s history. During the Ottoman period in particular, it was an intellectual centre for the region. After liberation, it served as a school until 1970 and subsequently housed citizen service centres and associations. Its history thus connects its regional role as an intellectual centre with later educational and community uses.

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Goumenissa is a monastery for men, a pilgrimage site and is associated with the miraculous icon of the Panagia of the same name. It is a religious focal point, distinct from the secular stories surrounding the fountain and the school.

Chrysallida is now used as an exhibition and museum space. Visits are possible by prior arrangement and appointment with Fr. Christodoulos Papakostas. Please arrange your appointment before visiting.

Wine and Regional Routes

Goumenissa is an important part of the Pella–Goumenissa Wine Route, one of the Wine Roads of Northern Greece. The town’s wine profile includes the dry red PDO Goumenissa wine. Alongside Xinomavro, it contains Negosca, a local red grape variety. The Wine Route provides the regional context; the red wine connects the town’s name with these two grape varieties.

In the wider region, you can visit wineries along the Axioupolis–Goumenissa–Fyliria axis, taste wines and get information about the grape harvest and wine tourism. These opportunities extend across the entire axis. Check the visiting arrangements with the individual winery in advance.

Walking Paths, Water and Traditions

At the Two Rivers site near Goumenissa, shaded paths beneath densely leafed plane trees invite you to take a walk. A natural waterfall flows there into a natural, stone-lined basin. The options clearly differ by interest: the route through lanes, squares and monuments focuses on cultural history, while the Two Rivers site centres on shaded walking paths.

Another facet of local tradition is the Bronzes of Goumenissa. They accompany the Epitaphios procession every Good Friday and also appear at local festivals. If your trip depends on one of these occasions, check the exact date and programme; individual event arrangements may vary.
