You can get to know Rapla through a range of cultural themes: church architecture, local history, galleries, stage performances and riverside paths. These examples show what makes the town appealing for a stay focused on history and culture.

Church Architecture and Local History

Rapla St. Mary Magdalene Church is the only rural church in Estonia with two towers. The current building was designed by Baltic German architect Rudolf von Engelhardt. Its furnishings also have a history of their own: the pulpit and altar were made in the workshops of Christian Ackermann and Quirinnius Rabe, and the church also houses an organ by the Kriisa brothers. Ring crosses from the 17th century can be seen in the churchyard. Its architecture, craftsmanship and historic grave markers offer different points of interest if you would like to explore the history of the church and its construction.

Rapla’s Freedom Monument commemorates 142 men from the Rapla parish community who fell in the First World War and the Estonian War of Independence. Rapla’s stone bridge is listed as a historic monument; it is 27.5 metres long and 8 metres wide. The parsonage is considered the oldest known building in the town and was built in the last quarter of the 18th century. The cultural centre, meanwhile, is a largely authentically preserved rural community hall with Expressionist architecture. These buildings and memorial sites offer different points of emphasis: remembrance of the fallen, a specific construction date, a listed historic monument and the architecture of a community hall.

Galleries, Music and Events

Rütmani Gallery is located in central Rapla and has been in operation since 2006. Trepigalerii opened in March 2022. At Susi Studio, the walls tell the story of Rapla’s popular music and the life of Tõnu Susi. These details represent different cultural highlights: a gallery in the town centre, a venue with a specific opening date and an exhibition of local music history. Together, they offer several themes to explore during your stay, without reducing art and music to a single story.

The Tammemäe stage in Rapla hosts concerts, theatre performances, and song and dance festivals. If you would like to include a particular performance or festival in your plans, check the dates in advance. This lets you consider the cultural programme as a possible focus of your trip without assuming that a specific event will take place during your stay.

A Walk Along the Riverside Promenade

The riverside promenade runs between the Vigala River and the church park and is ideal for a peaceful stroll. It connects a walking route with a clearly defined setting alongside the river and park. A shorter route of about 1.5 kilometres is also listed for the cultural and historical tour along the promenade. If you would like to include this particular tour in your plans, check its current availability.

Rapla offers a variety of themes to explore; its historic buildings, galleries and riverside promenade each appeal to different interests.
