Rapla: Discover Bogs, History and Glass
Accommodation in Rapla
The Mukri Nature Trail features an 18-metre-high observation tower with views across the entire bog; the Jalase Nature Trail follows a roughly one-kilometre boardwalk through the Sõbessoo bog to Lake Jalase. These distinct natural attractions give Rapla a clear framework for a trip that can be divided between landscapes, history and crafts.
History, Museums and Glass
Varbola Stronghold was in use from the 12th to the 14th century. Its courtyard later served as a cemetery, from the 15th to the 17th century. The dimensions also give a sense of the site: the courtyard covers about two hectares, and the rampart is around 580 metres long. These time periods mark two chapters in the same place—the use of the fortification and, later, the courtyard as a burial ground.
The Maarja-Magdaleena Church in Rapla was built in 1901 and is Estonia’s only rural church with two towers. The Atla-Eeru Tavern offers another way to explore history: it is the only surviving rural tavern in Estonia. Visitors can bake their own bread there; confirm that this activity is available before your trip.
At the Mahtra Peasant Museum, everyday objects and tools from the 19th century are presented alongside the background and events of the 1858 Mahtra War. The Sillaotsa Farm Museum showcases the life and customs of the Velise community from the 19th century to modern times. Its grounds cover 17 hectares and include nearly 200 different species of trees and shrubs. Horseback rides or carriage rides are available by prior arrangement; confirm in advance whether they are available for your visit.
Järvakandi’s glassmaking history dates back to the establishment of its first glass workshop in 1879. The Järvakandi Glass Museum explores the history of the glass industry in Järvakandi and Estonia. It offers lessons on the fundamentals, methods and technologies of glassmaking, and displays exhibits in a new exhibition building. As lessons and exhibition displays may change, check what is currently available in advance.
Bogs and Trails for Every Pace
The Mukri bog formed about 10,000 years ago and is among Estonia’s oldest bogs. Mukri Lake covers 2.2 hectares and features small islands and water lilies. From the observation tower on the Mukri Nature Trail, you can see across the entire bog. Check locally whether the tower is accessible before you travel.
The Jalase Nature Trail follows a roughly one-kilometre boardwalk through the Sõbessoo bog to Lake Jalase. The trail is accessible to wheelchair users and strollers; after severe weather, check whether the boardwalk is accessible. For a longer hike, the Paluküla-Loosalu Nature Trail connects Hiiemäe with the Loosalu bog island. At 106 metres, Hiiemäe is the highest peak in western Estonia. The loop trail is about 15 kilometres long; allow four to five hours for the hike. At the Loosalu end, there is a fire pit and a picnic area with firewood and a dry toilet. These outdoor facilities may change seasonally.
The two trails therefore differ considerably in length: the Jalase boardwalk is about one kilometre long, while the Paluküla-Loosalu loop is roughly 15 kilometres and takes four to five hours to hike. When planning, consider both the distance and the conditions at each destination.
Karst, Walks and Regional Experiences
The Kuimetsa karst area features collapsed valleys, sinkholes, depressions, channels and caves. Five caves are large enough to enter on foot; one is 12 metres long and eight metres wide. Access may vary depending on the water level and conditions, so check before entering.
The Jõepromenaad in Rapla was completed in 2006 and is a popular place for walks. Another regional experience is included in the “Follow the Water” itinerary section that begins in Rapla County: a ride on a raft sauna on the Vigala River. As availability may change, check before planning your trip.
