Churches and architectural history
Treimani has a clear cultural focus: the Lutheran and Orthodox churches represent different architectural histories. The Lutheran church was consecrated on September 21, 1867, and was historically also known as the Orajõe prayer house. A 2012 publication describes it as the oldest continuously operating church in Häädemeeste vald. The same publication describes the altarpiece as depicting Christ walking on water and holding Peter by the hand. This connects the church’s historical context with a specific subject in art. If you choose Treimani for its history, you can explore both its long church history and a particular theme in sacred art.
The Orthodox church was completed in 1935 and designed by Märt Merivälja. Its national romantic character is reflected in its hip roof and the small, round tent-roofed tower on the roof ridge. An onion-shaped tower was planned, but was not built at the request of the local population. This distinguishes the completed design from its planning history: the small tower is part of the described design, while the onion-shaped tower remained a proposal. The municipal heritage list dated December 5, 2023, lists the Orthodox church as an immovable architectural monument under registration number 16645.
The two churches therefore differ in more than denomination: for the Lutheran church, the consecration year, historical name and altarpiece are central; for the Orthodox church, it is the design, roof shape and unbuilt tower.
Fishing Village and Visitor Information
The Treimani Museum offers another perspective on local history, displaying old tools and objects from the fishing village. Alongside church architecture and sacred art, everyday objects from the fishing village form a distinct cultural theme. In 2005, the Treimani library was converted into a library, tourist information centre and visitor centre. The Treimani information point is one of the four main tourist information points in Häädemeeste vald; check whether it is currently operating before you visit. A rest area and information board were set up beside the community centre. Check their current condition in advance as well.
Coastal Trail and Landscape
The Baltic Coastal Hiking Route offers another way to experience the area. After Treimani, it runs for 2.8 kilometres along a narrow beach that may be sandy, stony or densely overgrown in places. When planning, consider both the length of the section and the possible terrain. Do not expect the beach to be uniform throughout: sand, stones or dense vegetation may occur in different sections. Treimani is also part of the 135.6-hectare Kivikupitsa Landscape Protection Area. The municipal list of protected areas dated December 5, 2023, includes Treimani within this area.
