Discover Kabli: Coast, Bird Migration and Culture
Accommodation in Kabli
A stay in Kabli can be planned around the coast, nature and culture. The sandy beach on the Gulf of Riga, the bird station in the nature reserve and the cultural programme at Kabli Seltsimaja cater to different travel interests. The trails also offer different options: from the signposted nature trail to longer hiking routes with named points in Kabli. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether to focus on the beach, bird migration, hiking or a cultural event.
Coast and trails in Kabli
Kabli rand is a sandy beach on the shore of the Gulf of Riga and a named stop on the Ranniku matkarada. Those interested in a route along the coast can use this beach as a specific reference point. Section 31 of the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route ends in the centre of Kabli. This is a separate route reference; the Kabli beach is designated as a named stop on the coastal route.
The Kabli looduse õpperada is marked with wooden signposts and information boards. For a longer distance, there is the 74 km RMK Oandu-Aegviidu-Ikla hiking trail: it passes the Kabli külastuskeskus and continues to the Kabli linnujaam. This means that, alongside the beach as a destination on a coastal route, you can choose a signposted nature trail or a longer trail with two named reference points in Kabli.
Bird station and nature themes
The observation tower at the Kabli linnujaam is in the heart of the Kabli looduskaitseala. In autumn, a 17-metre-high Heligoland trap is set up at the bird station. Birds have also been ringed there and bird migration studied for over 50 years. The trap’s autumn use and the long-running work on bird ringing and migration research offer different points of interest for anyone interested in birdlife and nature observation.
The Kabli külastuskeskus also offers nature education programmes for children and adults. Those who want to combine these nature themes with a walk will find both the signposted nature trail and the hiking trails mentioned above in Kabli. The observation tower, the trap and the research each give the bird station a distinct connection to the nature reserve and bird migration.
Culture, events and local traditions
Kabli Seltsimaja hosts concerts, theatre performances, workshops and various cultural programmes. Each year, it also holds a celebration of Estonian Independence Day for local residents and visitors. A traditional part of the celebration is potato and groat porridge; the tradition has continued for nearly 15 years. Alongside the nature and coastal attractions, there is therefore a recurring cultural event specifically for both local residents and visitors.
Kabli muinastulede öö takes place on Kabli beach. The tradition continues and attracts visitors from both nearby and further afield. If you are travelling for this event, check the date in advance. Another maritime memorial is the Jaala Kaja in Kabli, which commemorates the 150th anniversary of the launch of the first ocean-going sailing ship built here.
Café with seasonal opening hours
Kabli Pagar-pood is a café where pastries and yeast buns are made on site. Opening hours vary by season, so check them before your visit. The café adds a specific opportunity to sample baked goods made on site to the local attractions. Together with the beach, bird station, trails and cultural events, it offers a range of different ways to spend your time in Kabli.
