Discover Lääne County: Nature, Islands and History
Accommodation in Lääne County
Bogs and coastal landscapes, islands and museums give a trip through Lääne County a variety of highlights. Those who enjoy the outdoors will find inspiration in nature reserves and on beaches; museums offer insights into culture and history, from railways to an artist’s life. This makes it easy to plan a stay around your own interests.
Nature Among Bogs, Forests and Coastline
Läänemaa offers a variety of natural environments, with orchids, bog landscapes, forests, small islands and opportunities for birdwatching. Nature can be enjoyed year-round. For especially varied nature outings, late March to mid-June and September and October are good times to visit. These periods offer guidance if you would like to plan your trip around nature experiences.
The Nõva Nature Conservation and Recreation Area protects coastal landscapes and plant communities. Its protected landscapes include extensive bogs, forest areas and sandy beaches. Near Peraküla, five-metre-high coastal dunes surround the lakes; the beach has almost a dozen kilometres of singing sand. Beach access conditions may vary. A circular trail on Huitbergi Hill is marked with wooden signs. Trail markers may be maintained or changed.
Museums and Architectural History
In Haapsalu, the Railway and Communications Museum brings together two themes from Estonian history. The museum is home to Estonia’s only surviving diesel locomotive cab. The collection may change for conservation reasons. The museum in the Old Town Hall offers a different perspective on the past: the building, constructed in 1775, houses a permanent exhibition that presents Haapsalu in the early 20th century from the perspective of a visitor to the spa town.
Haapsalu Castle also tells the story of the region. This architectural landmark dates from the 13th century and served as the residence of local rulers until the end of the 17th century. By contrast, the Lyckholm Museum focuses on the history of Noarootsi, particularly Estonia’s first period of independence, from 1918 to 1940. These different focuses make museum visits a way to explore architectural history and the region’s past from a range of perspectives.
At the Ants Laikmaa Museum, you can see the artist’s studio and the living and working spaces in his former home. The house and its well-kept park preserve different aspects of his life and work. A guided forest-bathing experience is also offered along the park avenues laid out by Ants Laikmaa.
Islands and the Maritime Coast
Vormsi can be reached by car ferry from Rohuküla on the mainland. Check the timetable and ticketing rules before travelling. The island is home to St. Olav’s Church, built in the 14th century and notable for its lack of a tower. On Vormsi, a distinctive historic building combines with a ferry crossing that requires different planning from a visit on the mainland.
At Österby Pier, 215 metres of a stone breakwater built in the early 20th century remain; it once protected the boat harbour from storm winds. Österby Beach is used for swimming during the summer season. Surfing is a possible activity in Noarootsi and Nõva, depending on the weather. Maritime experiences therefore vary by place and season, from a historic harbour structure and summer swimming to weather-dependent surfing.
Regional Cuisine and Trip Planning
The cuisine and eating habits of Lääne County are influenced by the culinary traditions of the Coastal Swedes. Alongside nature and history, this is part of the region’s character and offers another perspective on local everyday culture.
The time of year also changes the focus of a trip. Nature outings are possible year-round and are especially varied during the spring and autumn periods mentioned above; playing and craft activities in the courtyard of Ilon’s Wonderland, by contrast, are available from May to August. Österby Beach is used for swimming seasonally. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first consider whether nature, museums or coastal experiences will shape your stay. If you plan to visit Vormsi, include the car ferry timetable and ticketing rules in your detailed planning.
