Vormsi Parish: Culture, Coast and Nature
Accommodation in Vormsi Parish
In Vormsi Landscape Protected Area, characteristic cultural landscapes sit alongside a diverse birdlife. The area also features coastal landforms, geological highlights and Vormsi’s cultural heritage. You can therefore choose different focuses for your trip: churches and museums, nature watching or outdoor activities.
Landscape, Birdlife and Geology
Vormsi Landscape Protected Area was established in 2000 to protect the archipelago’s characteristic landscape in western Estonia and endangered cultural landscapes typical of the region. The protected area provides breeding habitat for common terns, little terns, great bitterns, greylag geese and marsh harriers. At Lake Prästvike, the reed beds provide birds with feeding and sheltering areas; great bitterns and greylag geese are among the species mentioned there as well.
At the Huitberg limestone outcrop, geological history emerges in an unusual form: the Ordovician coral reef structure covers about 500 square metres and rises 2.5 metres above the surrounding plain. Fossilised corals and other Ordovician fossils can be seen there. Ordovician limestone rich in fossils also emerges along the coast at Saxby. The beach also has shingle ridges that extend far inland.
Prästvike is a former marine lagoon. The Rumpo Peninsula is home to unique and rare lichen communities. The Rumpo Hiking Trail can be explored on foot or by bicycle; its viewpoints offer views of Hullo and Sviby bays and the offshore islets. The Allika Hiking Trail is 2 kilometres long and leads to three different springs. The trails can therefore be distinguished by their respective focus: Allika combines a stated length with a clear destination, while Rumpo stands out for its views of bays and islets. The Lääne-Vormsi Cycling Route runs along the coast at Saxby and is managed by Vormsi Municipality.
Churches, Ring Crosses and Museums
St Olav’s Church dates from the first half of the 14th century. Its architectural features include a square nave, old ceiling paintings in the chancel and the absence of a tower. Vormsi cemetery has 343 ring crosses dating from 1743 to 1923; the collection is considered the largest of its kind in the world. The church and cemetery offer different points of interest: the former tells the story of the building, while the latter displays a collection of stone crosses assembled over many decades.
The Vormsi Farm Museum displays a restored farmstead typical of the Vormsi Swedes before the Second World War. Visitors can see authentically renovated buildings with thatched roofs, an extensive collection of household items and clothing, and photo exhibitions about life on Vormsi and in other coastal Swedish areas. A working traditional smoke sauna is also part of the museum.
The Six Foot Museum displays more than 550 antiques from Vormsi. A museum guide is included with admission; book your visit in advance at 5201695 and check the visitor information before setting out. Saxby Lighthouse is recognised as an architectural monument. Outside official opening hours, visits can be arranged by appointment at +372 5249 944. Arrange your visit in advance.
Activities and Practical Planning
On the Herbal Remedy Walk, you’ll learn to identify common medicinal plants and discuss their uses. The activity lasts 2 to 3 hours and ends with tea together. Animals’ Visit on Vormsi Island offers a different kind of nature encounter: a guided meeting with animals in their everyday surroundings. Marine Transport from Nordgrund offers guided experience tours for up to 10 people, including seal-watching trips and nature walks with a local guide.
For a trip focused on cultural heritage, the church, cemetery and museums offer a range of historical themes. Those more interested in landscape and nature can explore the bird habitats, fossils and trails described here. These preferences can also guide your choice of hotel for your stay, without requiring you to focus your trip on just one theme.
The Vormsi ferry carries cars and foot passengers. Check the timetable and ticket information before your trip so you can plan your journey accordingly.
