If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Nõmmemaa, you can use its nature themes as a starting point for planning. The bog, lake and landscape around Veski Quarry offer different focuses: a hike, a seasonal nature experience, or a look at how the landscape formed and has been used. The following places and conditions can help you decide what kind of stay you want.

Dunes, quarry and landscape history

The dunes at Veski Quarry are 30 metres high and formed 8,000 years ago, when the Littorina Sea covered this area. Their height and age shed light on two different aspects: the shape of the landscape and its geological origins. Veski Quarry is a protected former sandstone quarry dating from the Soviet era. This history of use adds to the much older story of the dunes’ formation, without conflating the two periods.

The landscape around the quarry is recovering from the forest fire of 2008. The protected natterjack toad has settled in the water-filled depressions; its presence can vary by season. An information board at Veski Quarry covers forest-fire prevention, the natterjack toad and the sand lizard. This places landscape conservation and knowledge of local species alongside the site’s geological and historical themes.

Bog walk, spring calls and fishing

A 4 km round trip leads from the Veskijärve campsite through the bog to Lake Tänavjärv and back. The stated distance covers the entire route. This makes it possible to plan a walk with a clearly defined distance that connects the bog and the lake. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Another nature experience is seasonal: in spring, you can hear the calls of the rare natterjack toad at an old quarry 1 km from the Veskijärve campsite. The walk to Lake Tänavjärv and this seasonal opportunity to listen therefore offer different focuses for planning. Lake Veskijärv is also suitable for fishing; check the applicable fishing regulations separately.

Staying overnight at the Veskijärve campsite

The Veskijärve campsite is located in the Läänemaa Suursoo Landscape Protection Area. Facilities include a shelter, a fire pit and a dry toilet. There is a clear limit on tents: a maximum of three tents are allowed, with up to four people in each. If you are planning a stay there, bear this limit in mind when deciding on your group size.

Facilities and campsite rules can change. Check the current conditions for the campsite before your trip. This helps ensure that your plans reflect the facilities actually available and the rules in force.

Getting to the Veskijärve campsite

At kilometre 26 of the Nõva road, turn towards Variku. After 4 km, turn again at the “RMK Veskijärv” sign; then continue for another 2.2 km to the campsite. As signage and road conditions can change, it is a good idea to check the route again before setting off. This lets you consider the nature experiences, seasonal options and specific campsite conditions separately when planning your trip.
