If you are looking for a hotel in Põltsamaa, you can start by considering which aspects of the town you want to shape your stay: castle and church history, parks and river views, a self-guided route, or local food and wine culture. Local attractions range from historic buildings to a permanent exhibition on modern wine and food history. The examples below can help you explore Põltsamaa according to your interests.

Castle, Museum and Churches

Põltsamaa Castle was founded on the riverbank in 1272. The Põltsamaa Museum is located within the old castle walls, where guided tours and educational programmes can be booked. Since summer 2024, the permanent exhibition “Modern Wine and Food from Põltsamaa” has also been open to visitors at the castle. If you would like to see Põltsamaa from above, you can climb the castle’s seven-storey tower to the viewing platform; from there, you can see across the town.

The churches also offer insight into different architectural and historical periods. Põltsamaa Niguliste Church was built into the walls of a 13th-century castle gate passage and a gun tower erected around 1500. The Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit in Põltsamaa was consecrated on 10 September 1895. Examples of medieval architecture thus stand alongside an event precisely dated to the late 19th century.

Parks, Garden Design and River Views

The park at Uue-Põltsamaa Manor was laid out as a French geometric garden at the end of the 18th century. It is protected both as a natural site and as a heritage site. Friendship Park offers a different blend of landscape and culture: its monumental sculpture “Road to Olympus” bears the names of Estonian Olympic medallists throughout history. The park contains more than 6,000 trees.

Rose Island was designed in 2001 and is home to 2,000 roses. From the island, you can see the Põltsamaa River and the fish ladder. Kördiööbiku Park adds a different connection to local history: it is named after a pre-war school in the park area where girls learned to cook, sew and knit. The green spaces therefore have different focuses: from historic garden design to a sculpture connected with sport, and roses, the river and the fish ladder.

Walking or Cycling Route

The Põltsamaa discovery game is a self-guided visitor route through historic sites, green parks, riverside paths and landscapes with beautiful natural views. The main route is 4.5 kilometres long and runs from the castle to Kuningamäe. You can complete it on foot or by bicycle. Its length and destination give you specific details to consider when choosing, while the mode of transport is up to you.

Another activity option is renting a canoe on the Põltsamaa River. At 135 kilometres long, it is Estonia’s third-longest river. So, when it comes to getting around, you can choose between a route of a specified length with two possible ways to travel and canoeing on the river.

Food and Wine History

Fruit and berry wines have been made in Põltsamaa for almost 100 years. The Põltsamaa Food Museum presents the history of food production in the town from the 1920s to the present day. There is also the permanent exhibition at the castle, which focuses on wine and food from Põltsamaa and has been open to visitors since summer 2024. When deciding what to focus on, you can choose between historic buildings, landscapes and activities, and local food and wine history.
