A seven-storey tower with an observation platform opens up views of the town: Põltsamaa Castle combines striking architecture with a long history on the riverbank. It was founded in 1272. The Põltsamaa Niguliste Church also tells the story of several building phases: in 1632, it was incorporated into the walls of the castle’s gateway, dating from the 13th century, and its gun tower, built around 1500. After a fire in July 1941, the church was restored by 1952.

Within the walls of the old Order Castle, the Põltsamaa Museum presents the history of the castle, the town and the parish. Visitors who want to explore these topics in greater depth can book guided tours, museum lessons and photography programmes there. Alongside the surviving buildings, the stories behind the castle and town are also a focus.

Rose Island and the River Landscape

Põltsamaa roosisaar (Rose Island) brings together a distinctive local history and views of the river landscape. Before the Second World War, it was the centre of the town and was called Kaubasaar. In 2001, the island was landscaped with 2,000 rose plants, a pavilion, walkways and lighting. From there, you can see the Põltsamaa River and a fish ladder. At 135 kilometres, the river is Estonia’s third-longest, and a promenade has been completed along its banks.

Sõpruse Park offers a different green perspective. It has more than 6,000 trees, including trees planted by well-known Estonian and international figures from society, culture and sport. The combination of parkland and personal memories gives a visit its own cultural dimension, without requiring a single building to be the main attraction.

Bridges, Trails and Winter Sports

The Põltsamaa bridge tour can be completed on foot or by bicycle throughout the year and takes in all 19 bridges. Check the latest route details before setting out. For a different kind of activity, Kuningamäe has three marked health and recreation trails, measuring 1.1, 1.5 and 5 kilometres. They are suitable for runners, walkers, Nordic walkers and cyclists. As surfaces and maintenance can change, it is advisable to check the current conditions.

In winter, the Kuningamäe trails include maintained, lit ski tracks, a toboggan hill and an outdoor fitness trail; use depends on seasonal conditions and maintenance. Kuningamäe Winter Centre also has a practice slope for skiers and snowboarders: the climb is 140 metres long, and the descent is about 200 metres. A lift, small jumps, rollers and tubes add to the facilities. These measurements give a specific sense of the slope, while seasonal operation and the centre’s ongoing development should be taken into account when planning a visit.

Those who prefer playing with a disc can find a course with ten baskets, open fairways, wooded tunnels and water hazards at Kuningamäe Disc Golf Park. Use of the park is free; equipment rental is charged separately and prices may change. As the course and obstacles may change, it is a good idea to check the current conditions before visiting.

Food History and Wine

The Põltsamaa Food Museum is located in the same premises as the Põltsamaa Wine Cellar. The exhibition on local food production spans the 1920s, with coffee, potato starch and wine, Soviet-era products in tubes for cosmonauts, and the present day. Food offers a tangible way to explore different periods of local history.

The entire range of wines can be tasted and purchased at the wine cellar. Groups can choose tasting packages featuring three or five wines. This lets you tailor your visit to your interests: explore regional food history, enjoy a wine tasting, or combine the two.

Travelling by Bus

Põltsamaa has bus connections to Tallinn and Tartu. Some buses stop in town, while most stop at Puhu-Rist on the Tallinn–Tartu highway. As timetables and stopping patterns may change, check the connection for your travel date before departure.
