For your trip to Jõgeva, you can choose from a range of experiences focused on bog landscapes, cultural history and active pursuits. A bog observation tower, a museum visit and a canoe trip each offer a different way to explore the region.

Bog landscapes and canoe trips

The Männikjärv Bog Study Trail is in the Endla Landscape Reserve in Jõgeva County. A seven-metre-high observation tower stands along the trail, offering views across the entire Männikjärv bog. The tower is a clear landmark for anyone who wants to see the bog landscape from above.

The Põltsamaa River also flows through the natural landscape of the Endla area: it runs through the Endla Nature Reserve, where you can take in a largely untouched bog landscape. A canoe trip along the river through the bog can be a one-day, two-day or multi-day adventure. You can also take a detour to Lake Endla during the trip. Depending on the season, you can step ashore at the edge of the bog and pick lingonberries, blueberries or the rare cloudberries. The different tour formats give you a concrete idea of how much time to set aside for this nature experience.

Kalevipoeg and regional cultural history

Kalevipoja Koda is in Kääpa, Jõgevamaa, and includes the Kalevipoeg Museum, the Kalevipoeg Adventure Park, the Kalevipoeg Play Yard and the Saare Community Centre. The museum introduces visitors to Estonia’s national epic, “Kalevipoeg”, in a playful way. You can also listen to the epic as an audiobook there and watch a short film in the “Lennuk” about places in Estonia associated with Kalevipoeg.

The activities related to Kalevipoeg are quite varied: at the adventure park, you can choose between a higher and a lower course, or play disc golf. In the play yard, oversized tools and furniture from Kalevipoeg’s world are attractions for climbing and swinging. This lets you combine a museum visit with other thematically related activities, each offering a different experience.

In Põltsamaa, the museum is located within the walls of the old Order Castle. The old museum building tells the history of Põltsamaa, while the new gatehouse presents the history of the castle across three floors. The castle’s historical role is also noteworthy: during the Livonian War, it served as the residence of the Livonian king. You can book guided tours, museum lessons and photography programmes.

Palamuse: church, museum and events

Palamuse St Bartholomew’s Church is one of the oldest medieval churches in northern Tartu County and was first mentioned in written records in 1234. Its distinctive wood carvings on the altar and pulpit date from 1696. A church service is held every Sunday at 11 a.m.; concerts and occasional performances are also held. If you plan to attend a service, it is a good idea to check the time in advance.

The exhibitions at the Palamuse Museum are available in Estonian, Russian and English. This may be helpful when planning a museum visit if you would like to experience the exhibition in one of these languages.

Crafts and railway history in Avinurme

Avinurme Puiduait offers workshops in basket weaving, creating with wood shavings, and painting wooden shoes and baskets. The focus is on hands-on work with wood and weaving materials. The café serves lunch daily, homemade cakes and pastries, freshly baked bread and other dishes. The menu may change.

The Avinurme museum railway includes a restored one-kilometre stretch of track, a railway bridge, railway vehicles and a waiting pavilion. From May to October, the museum railway offers nostalgic train rides; booking at least one day in advance is required. Check the dates before your trip and plan your booking accordingly.

More destinations for different interests

The ancient site of Kassinurme was established about 1,500 years ago. Its sacred grove is considered one of Estonia’s oldest sacred sites. If you are interested in historical and cultural sites, the age of the site and the significance of the grove offer two different points of interest.

For an active outing, head to Kaarepere Disc Golf Park on Aruküla Hill. Its course is 851 metres long, has nine baskets and winds through varied terrain. It is particularly suitable for beginners and children. The clear course length and number of baskets give you a concrete idea of what to expect, while the terrain sets the course apart from a museum-only or sightseeing visit.
