Discover Türi: Culture, Lake and Cherry Blossoms
Accommodation in Türi
Türi combines local history with waterside paths, museums and events throughout the year. The city can be explored through a variety of themes: from its medieval church and broadcasting history to a cherry avenue by an artificial lake. There are also specific things to consider when planning when to visit, such as the cherry blossoms in spring and the Türi Lake Party in July.
Cultural history in Türi
Construction of the three-aisled Türi Church began in the second half of the 13th century. Its Baroque altar dates from the 17th century and was created by woodcarver Cristian Ackermann. The church and altar thus represent different periods in the town’s history.
The permanent exhibition at the Estonian Broadcasting Museum spans the history of broadcasting from the first radio experiment to the present day. On display are historical recording devices and microphones, as well as equipment from studios and broadcasting stations. By prior arrangement, you can book a guided tour of the exhibition, a radio play or a television news workshop there.
The Türi Museum focuses on two important influences on the town’s development: the railway and the paper and pulp mill. It also offers a glimpse into local small businesses from the pre-war period. Examples include a brickworks, a ladies’ hair salon and a sewing workshop. The museum opened in 1995.
The railway station is also part of the region’s transport history. It was built in 1900 as a transport hub in Järvamaa, along with the Tallinn–Viljandi narrow-gauge railway line. Another chapter in local history concerns the school: in 1924, the Türi Aiamajandusgümnaasium began classes in a new, modern school building. The construction of this building was made possible with the support of Türi’s residents.
The Konna House tour offers another way to discover local crafts. It lasts an hour and a half and takes you through four to five craft workshops. Check the booking details before your trip.
Lake, Cherry Avenue and Outdoor Activities
The artificial lake in Türi was created in the mid-20th century on the site of a former clay quarry. A walking path about 1.2 kilometres long runs around the lake, offering an easy way to combine time by the water with a manageable walk.
The Türi Cherry Avenue was planted by the lake in 2006 with 155 Accolade ornamental cherry trees. The trees flower before their leaves emerge. This sequence makes the cherry avenue a distinctive springtime attraction in Türi. The beach volleyball courts by the lake offer opportunities to play beach volleyball, indiaca and badminton throughout the summer.
You can also walk along the banks of the Pärnu River in Türi. Nordic walking is another option for getting active, and the forest has technical mountain bike trails that offer a challenge for MTB enthusiasts. The options vary both in terrain and activity, from the walking path around the lake to technically demanding mountain bike trails.
Events throughout the year
Türi’s Spring Capital season includes a series of cultural, sporting and community events, as well as a ceremonial welcome to spring. The Türi Flower Fair is also closely associated with spring: it has been held for decades at the sites along Kalevi Street and is the highlight of the Estonian gardening spring. Its tradition dates back to the first flower fair and continues to this day. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the specific date in advance.
Another regular fixture on the calendar is the Türi Lake Party, held every year in July. The events calendar thus offers two distinct seasonal opportunities: spring, with its series of events and flower fair, and July, with the festival by the lake.
