Paide brings together medieval history, old town houses, and trails by the water. When looking for a hotel in Paide, you can choose your stay based on what interests you most: the castle and museums offer different insights into history, while hiking trails and the artificial lake provide outdoor destinations. The sights range from historic buildings and a self-guided city tour to specific places for walks and cycling.

Cultural History in the Castle, Museum, and Old Town

Paide Castle was a medieval fortress of the Livonian Order; its construction began in 1265 on Vallimägi Hill. The surviving Vallitorn in the castle complex is a fully restored, octagonal defensive tower. It houses the Wittenstein Centre for Time: an elevator takes visitors through different periods of Estonian history. By contrast, the Wittenstein Activity Museum presents life in a small town in the 19th century through workshops, stories, and objects. The Järvamaa Museum explores the history of Järvamaa through its collections of objects.

Wittenstein also offers a bookable 19th-century-style tavern feast, with period-inspired flavours and beer served in tankards. As availability may change, it is advisable to check before planning.

In the old town, 24 houses have information plaques with QR codes for a self-guided city tour. The house histories tell visitors about former uses, construction dates, and residents, as well as present-day uses and notable features of the buildings. This brings together architectural history and the changes a house has undergone over time.

Paide Püha-Risti Church was completed in 1848 as a late-classical building with neo-Baroque elements. Its interior wall features the oil painting “Püha õhtusöömaaeg”. The town hall offers another architectural marker in time: its late Art Nouveau-style façade was created in 1925 when a wooden building was remodelled.

The Arvo Pärt Music Garden marks the site of the composer’s birthplace. It features two limestone sculptures by Riho Kulla: “Paesümfoonia” and the piano-shaped work “Loomingu läte”. Concerts can also be held in the garden.

Trails and Outdoor Destinations

The Paide hiking trail follows a former railway embankment and runs along the banks of the Reopalu and Pärnu rivers. On the Paide Winter Trail, you can choose between two destinations: Paide’s artificial lake, 6 km away, and the historic Vallitorn, 7.4 km away. The Winter Trail is suitable for hikers of all ages; its information boards were created by young people from Paide Gymnasium.

The artificial lake has two swimming areas, a boat pier, a children’s playground, and several ball courts. You can also take circular walks in the lake area; in summer, water lilies can be seen in bloom there. This means that one place offers opportunities for a walk alongside a range of leisure activities by the water.

In the wider regional context, a well-maintained, 15 km cycling trail connects Paide and Türi. It adds a dedicated cycling link between the two towns to the local trails.
