Charlottenhof: Bogs, Hiking Trails and Railway History
Accommodation in Charlottenhof
Charlottenhof (Aegviidu) is a destination for travelers who want to make nature and hiking the focus of their stay. In Aegviidu, bog landscapes, longer hiking trails, cycling routes and railway history come together. The RMK Aegviidu Visitor Centre adds exhibitions, nature films and nature education programs to the mix. When choosing a hotel, it’s worth first considering the kind of day you’d like to have: exploring nature on a boardwalk, taking a long hike or getting active while adding a cultural theme.
Bog Landscape and the Sõõriksoo Nature Trail
The Sõõriksoo Nature Trail is in the Kõrvemaa Landscape Protection Area. Along the trail, you’ll encounter bog landscapes, drained bog forest and a bog with old peat cuttings; you can also find traces of animals and birds there. This makes the trail interesting if you’d like to notice both landforms and animal tracks as you walk. The bog landscape and drained bog forest show different features, while the old peat cuttings add further traces to the landscape. The 700-meter boardwalk is designed for wheelchairs and strollers.
The nature trail is right next to Aegviidu railway station and can be reached by train. The Aegviidu Visitor Centre is nearby. This makes it easy to combine a visit to Sõõriksoo with the town’s railway connections.
Hiking and Cycling
The 27-kilometer Järvi–Aegviidu Hiking Trail is accessible from the RMK Aegviidu Visitor Centre. It includes 3 kilometers of wooden boardwalks, several campsites and fire pits. For a longer hike, these trail sections and facilities, as well as the total distance, offer practical details to help plan your route.
The cycling routes have different features: The 10-kilometer Aegviidu–Nelijärve–Jäneda President’s Trail starts near Aegviidu railway station and is marked with blue arrows and signposts. The paved Aegviidu–Nelijärve–Jäneda cycling route is 12 kilometers long. This lets you take distance, markings and surface into account when choosing a route.
Another activity is the Aegviidu Disc Golf Park. It has nine baskets and is suitable for beginners. This adds a separate leisure option to the hiking and cycling trails.
Nature Education and Local History
The RMK Aegviidu Visitor Centre is in the heart of Aegviidu, surrounded by the forests and lakes of Kõrvemaa. It provides information about recreational activities in the area and RMK hiking trails that branch off here. Exhibitions, nature films and nature education programs add to this guidance. The centre thus combines information about the trails with nature education.
Aegviidu locomotive depot was built in 1870 as part of the railway complex. Today, it houses a hiking and information centre where you can book hikes. The building’s former function as part of the railway complex and its current use as a hiking and information centre can thus be seen side by side.
Aegviidu Alexander Church also offers insight into local history: It was known as the Aegviidu Forest Chapel and was consecrated on December 6, 1896.
