Hara: Harbour, maritime history and nature trail
Accommodation in Hara
Hara combines maritime history with the landscapes of the Juminda Peninsula. Three differences are especially important when planning your trip: the former technical function of the submarine base, the changing landscapes along the Majakivi-Pikanõmme nature trail, and destinations with different opening times. This lets you organise your itinerary around your interests and travel dates, rather than treating a boat trip and a museum visit as stops that can be planned at any time.
Maritime history and Hara Harbour
The Hara submarine base was a former secret demagnetisation station of the Soviet Navy. The hulls of ships and submarines were made invisible to magnetic mines there. The site offers a tangible insight into military technology history, distinct from the landscapes of the nature trail. Hara Harbour has an information point that provides information about attractions in the harbour area and other harbours in the region. If you would like to find your bearings at the harbour, you can ask about both topics there.
Trail and landscape on Juminda
The RMK Majakivi-Pikanõmme nature trail is one of the main tourist attractions and sights in the village of Hara. The trail is 7 km long and starts at a car park near the village of Virve. It passes through the higher central part of the Juminda Peninsula. Here, former beach ridges and sand dunes alternate with strips of forest and bog. The car park has space for 30 cars or 3 buses. Majakivi is the largest erratic boulder in Lahemaa National Park; the Pikanõmme observation tower stands at the highest point of the Juminda Peninsula.
Harbour, island and water activities
Hara Harbour can also be reached by sea. In summer, you can take a boat from there to Hara Island, which is part of Lahemaa National Park. A SUP board lets you explore the area around the harbour. The water activities differ in their destination and nature: the boat takes you to the island, while SUP focuses on the harbour area. Bear in mind that summer is the season for the boat trip.
Plan a visit to the Women’s Museum
The Women’s Museum is located at Kõrvemetsa farm in the village of Hara. It was open only a few times a year. So check in advance whether a visit fits your travel dates, and do not plan it as an activity that is always available.
Weigh up your interests and available time
If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Hara, first decide what you would like to focus on: the former submarine base offers a glimpse into maritime technology history, while the nature trail showcases the landscapes of Juminda. Summer matters for the trip to Hara Island; visiting the Women’s Museum depends on whether there is a suitable opening date. This way, you can plan your travel dates and hotel search around the interests that matter most to you.
