Salmistu Bay lies on the coast of Kolga between the headlands of Salmistu and Tsitre. The village of Salmistu lies within the Kolga Bay Landscape Protection Area, which protects the grey seal (Halichoerus grypus). This gives you two ways to orient yourself: the bay refers to the coastal area, while the protected area reflects the character of the village landscape. Together with activities on Pedassaar and in the Malusi Archipelago, this can help you decide whether you are more interested in the coast, an island trail or a boat trip.

Coast and swimming spots

Salmistu Beach is one of the bathing and swimming spots in the Kuusalu tourism area. For planning purposes, you can distinguish between two aspects: the bay describes the coastal area, while the beach is part of the region’s network of bathing and swimming spots. If you would like to make bathing or swimming the focus of your visit, this regional context gives you an additional point of reference when choosing your destination.

Harbour and island trail

At Salmistu Harbour, guests arriving by sea have access to drinking water, electricity and a toilet. In autumn 2025, a multi-purpose building was completed there to promote local fishing and seafaring traditions. The harbour therefore combines practical facilities for those arriving by sea with a cultural connection to these traditions.

Pedassaar Island is accessible by boat from Salmistu Harbour; confirm boat availability before your trip. The hiking trail on Pedassaar has eleven information points about the island’s coast, coastal types and zones, and vegetation. This gives the trail a natural-history focus and draws attention to the different features of the coastal landscape. If you like to include themed information along the way, you can think of the trail as a nature-focused hike.

Seal watching and events

The seal-watching trip in the Malusi Archipelago takes place exclusively from a boat, to disturb the animals as little as possible. It lasts up to 2.5 hours and is intended for groups of four. This offers two different formats: a trail with nature information points on Pedassaar, and a boat trip to observe wildlife in the Malusi Archipelago. Advance booking is required. As group size and duration may change, check these details before making plans if you would like to schedule the trip.

The Salmistu summer concerts may also be relevant when planning your trip: they are among the region’s cultural and traditional events. The programme varies from year to year. If a concert is important for your travel dates, check the relevant dates and programme details in advance. Unlike the geographical description of the bay, these events depend on the programme for each year.
