Lidečko: Rocks, Nature and Wallachian Culture
Accommodation in Lidečko
Lidečko lies in the Senice Valley, on the border between the Vizovické vrchy and the Javorníky. Natural monuments, historic buildings and Wallachian traditions give the town its varied character. If you are looking for a hotel in Lidečko, these themes can help you plan your stay around your interests: the rocky landscape and climbing offer a different focus from cultural history or recurring festival dates.
Rocky Landscapes and Protected Nature
The Čertovy skály natural monument lies on the northern edge of Lidečko. The sandstone wall is about 150 metres long and up to 25 metres high. Climbers use it as a training crag, with around 100 established routes. The site is therefore known both for its distinctive rock formation and for climbing. The Kopce natural monument protects a large rockslide with fissure caves and offers another way to explore the area’s geology.
The landscape protection areas also need to be distinguished by location: the part of Lidečko’s cadastral area east of the railway lies within the Beskydy Protected Landscape Area. This connects the Senice Valley with protected landscapes whose locations are specifically identified. Those interested in nature around Lidečko can explore both the rock formations and the protected areas.
Getting Around and Places to Visit
Directly below Čertovy skály there is a car park, a children’s playground and a place to get refreshments. The ČD Lidečko-ves stop provides access to the rocks. If you plan to travel by public transport, check the current services before your trip.
Another place to visit is the Betlém in Lidečko. It is open year-round in the municipal office building and features more than 320 figures of people and animals. Alongside the central Nativity scene, it depicts life in a Wallachian village in the 20th century. The display thus combines the familiar Nativity theme with scenes of everyday village life. Check the opening arrangements before your trip.
Buildings, History and Trails
The Baroque Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria is the oldest historic building in the municipality. Lidečko is also home to two early Baroque bells: one dedicated to Saint Catherine, dating from 1664, and one to the Holy Saviour, dating from 1665.
A path about one kilometre long leads from the town centre to a typical Wallachian chapel built in 1949. The approximate distance describes the route, not a specific walking time. The Vařákovy paseky nature trail offers another way to explore the region’s past: it presents the history of the burned-down Wallachian settlement of Vařákovy paseky. The building and the trail therefore focus on different subjects: the history of a local religious building on the one hand, and the memory of a settlement on the other.
Festivals and Cycling Route
Recurring events include the Dožínky harvest festival and the Lidečkovský jarmark. The harvest festival is usually held in late August: a procession passes through the village, participants wear Wallachian folk costumes, and a programme follows beneath Čertovy skály. The market takes place in autumn, in early November. Its programme includes a demonstration of traditional home butchering and a presentation of products by local craftspeople and business owners. The events therefore take place in different seasons; the exact dates may vary from year to year, so it is advisable to check before your trip.
Cyclists also have a named connection to the town: the northern section of the Bevlava cycle route runs from Ústí u Vsetína through Lidečko to Valašské Příkazy. These place names help identify the section. Nature, cultural events and the cycling route thus offer different ways to include Lidečko in your travel plans.
