Planning a trip to Bařice-Velké Těšany can be shaped around different interests: cultural history in Bařice and Velké Těšany, as well as destinations for walking and cycling. The windmill, chapels and memorials provide distinct historical points of interest; protected natural sites add another perspective on the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel, you can start by considering whether your trip will focus more on architectural and local history, outdoor activities, or a mix of both.

Windmill and St Florian’s Chapel in Velké Těšany

The Velké Těšany windmill stands on the southwest-facing slope above the village, near Chvaletiny Forest and about 200 m from the road to the neighbouring municipality of Vrbky. The slope above the village and proximity to the forest are useful landmarks; the road to Vrbky is about 200 m away. In 2014, the mill was declared a national cultural monument. It has been open to the public since 1979. Check the current opening arrangements before you travel so you can plan your visit accordingly.

The Chapel of St Florian in Velké Těšany was completed in 1926 and dedicated to St Florian. Today, it hosts regular religious ceremonies and is the centre of the local parish feast celebrations every year around St Florian’s Day. The site therefore brings together architectural history and a recurring religious tradition. A war memorial to residents who fell in the First and Second World Wars was erected in front of the chapel in 1946. The chapel and memorial stand side by side, also connecting the visit to the memory of residents who died in both world wars.

Chapels and memorial sites in Bařice

The chapel in Bařice was built in 1909 on the site of an older wooden bell tower. It was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on 24 October 1909. A mass with an accompanying programme is held there every year on the second Saturday in June. This recurring date is a useful point of reference when planning your visit: if you would like to attend the celebration, check the event details before travelling.

Several monuments in Bařice and Velké Těšany also commemorate different stories. The statue of the Virgin Mary at Potoky was consecrated on 13 June 1920 and restored in 2010. The 1922 cemetery cross is dedicated to residents who fell in the First World War. By the road to Těšnovice stands a stone cross from 1851; victims of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and of cholera in Velké Těšany are buried beneath it. Another, repaired cross from 1904 was solemnly consecrated on 3 October 1999 in a park at the lower end of the village. The dates mark different aspects: construction, consecration, restoration and remembrance of the dead.

Walks, nature and cycling

The memorial lime tree in Velké Těšany is a protected tree on the road to Těšnovice. It is a popular destination for walks and a place to rest. If you are planning a walk, you can also make the lime tree a stop for a break.

The protected natural monument of Obora lies nearby, about 1 km north of Velké Těšany. It is located on a gently wooded slope of the hill of the same name, which is also called Hvězda. Skalka u Trňáku offers a different landscape: this sun-exposed grassy slope lies on the edge of the Chřiby hills, west of Velké Těšany. From Velké Těšany, you can reach Skalka by following a farm track towards the junction near Zlámanka and then onward towards Drahlov.

A cycling route loops around Velké Těšany and connects Kroměříž with Bunč via Vrbka and Kostelany. The Stezky Severními Chřiby trail network offers information boards, signposts at trail junctions, viewpoints and benches; some sections also have educational features for children. This makes it possible to include different activities in your trip planning: visiting historic sites, walking to a natural destination or cycling along the route described.
