Rouchovany: Church, Nature and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Rouchovany
Rouchovany can be explored through its architectural history, nature and routes. When planning your stay, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the natural area in the village district of Šemíkovice, and the cycling and hiking trails offer different points of interest.
Church and Local History
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary retains a Romanesque core. At the end of the 13th century, a Gothic chancel was added to its eastern side. The tower was added in two construction phases: in 1585 it was built to a height of 15 metres, then completed to its present height of 28.40 metres in 1610 in the style known as Romanesque Renaissance, with paired windows. The three bells are named after Saint Wenceslas, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph.
The medieval and early modern centre of the village is also historically significant: it is considered an archaeological site with layers of evidence dating from the 12th to the 15th centuries. The church’s architectural history and the traces of different periods in the village centre thus offer two distinct insights into Rouchovany’s long development.
The programme for the traditional pilgrimage in 2025 included a Mass at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the raising of the maypole and a dance event in the marketplace. If you would like to plan your trip around the pilgrimage, check the upcoming dates and programme in advance.
Nature and Time at Stejskal
Výrova skála Nature Reserve is located in Šemíkovice, a village district of the municipality of Rouchovany. It protects thermophilous oak forests and steppe grassland, as well as rare plant and animal species, including eagle owls and middle spotted woodpeckers.
Swimming in natural surroundings is possible at the Stejskal pond in Rouchovany; the area includes lawns and a sandy beach. During the season, rowing boats and pedal boats are available for hire at Stejskal. Parking is available on the grounds of the Stejskal outdoor swimming pool, which also has a restaurant that may operate seasonally. As boat rentals are also seasonal, it is worth checking these services before your trip.
Hiking and Cycling Routes
A green-marked hiking trail crosses the northern part of the municipality. A yellow-marked trail follows the Rokytná along the southern boundary. The two hiking routes are distinguished by their locations: the green trail runs through the north, while the yellow one follows the municipality’s southern boundary.
Cycle Route 401 passes through the Rouchovany area and connects Třebíč, Hrotovice, Dukovany and Moravský Krumlov. It is also part of the Jihlava–Český Těšín route. While the hiking trails can be identified by their locations within the municipality, Cycle Route 401 is defined by the places it connects and its role as part of a longer route.
Further Historical Connections
The medieval archaeological site of Mstěnice lies near Rouchovany. Its remains include a fortified manor, a smithy, stables and sheds. The site thus complements the archaeological remains in the village centre with another connection to the area’s medieval history.
The “Pánova” spring is also associated with a local legend from Rouchovany. It is one of the village’s traditional stories, while the church, the archaeological site in the village centre and Mstěnice offer other ways to explore its history.
