Get to know Nová Ves through its distinctive layout and specific historical landmarks. The circular village square with two ponds shapes the village’s appearance; memorial sites, the first recorded mention and an archaeological find add further layers of history. A marked cycle route and horse-riding opportunities may also play a part in planning your trip. This can help you decide whether Nová Ves is right for a trip that combines landscapes and local history.

Village Square and Landscape

Nová Ves has preserved a characteristic circular village square that shapes the village’s appearance. Two ponds lie in the middle of the square. Its circular shape and the water give the village centre a distinct, cohesive character.

A flooded limestone quarry lies around 500 metres north of Nová Ves. The site is a source of crystalline limestone. The ponds in the centre of the village square and the quarry to the north therefore represent two different landscape features. If you plan to visit the quarry, check the local conditions again.

Local History and Memorial Sites

The first documented mention of Nová Ves dates from 1224 and appears in a charter issued by King Přemysl Otakar I. Nová Ves initially belonged to the Benedictine monastery in Třebíč. The transfer of ownership of the Třebíč estate is another historical reference point: in 1556, King Ferdinand I granted it to Vratislav z Pernštejna as hereditary property.

The memorials have different dedications: the monument in the village square between the ponds commemorates the victims of the First and Second World Wars; the monument to Jan Svoboda stands in the Větrovice forest in Nová Ves. It commemorates a member of the State Police who was killed by German saboteurs on 11 May 1945. One monument is dedicated to the victims of two wars, while the other commemorates a named individual and a specific date of death.

The history of the discovery also points to a specific date: in 1904, remains of a mammoth skeleton were found at the Žlíbek site during road construction, when foundations for bridge piers were being excavated. Some of the mammoth remains found at Žlíbek are kept at the Zapadomoravské muzeum v Třebíči. These historical reference points are clearly distinct in time: 1224 marks the first documented mention, while 1904 marks the mammoth find at Žlíbek during roadworks.

Cycling and Horse Riding

For cycling travellers, marked cycle route 162 is a specific point of reference: it passes through Nová Ves on the route between Třebíč and Jihlava. Check the route details before setting off. Ranč Vápenka offers rides or horse-riding opportunities for children and adults; participation is subject to arrangements with the operator. When planning your trip, you can choose between a cycling connection and an activity that requires prior arrangements.
