Střítež: Culture and trips south of Třebíč
Accommodation in Střítež
Střítež lies about two kilometres south of Třebíč, in the direction of Znojmo. The village combines remarkable architectural and cultural monuments with opportunities for trips and leisure activities. The different locations can help you find your way: some are by the church and on the village square, while others are along the road or in the countryside around Střítež.
Romanesque architecture and cemetery
The Church of St Mark is one of the oldest surviving monuments of medieval sacred architecture. It dates from the early 13th century and is a Romanesque, single-nave building. The church and altar face east. This clear, simple layout gives the building its distinctive architectural character.
The church complex includes a cemetery, a rubble-stone wall, and a wrought-iron, double-leaf entrance gate. A mortuary chapel is built into the north-west corner of the perimeter wall. There is also a Baroque chapel with a mortuary chapel in the cemetery beside the church. The chapel is a cultural monument; it was built in 1648 by Lukáš Georg Cyprianus, an official of the Sádek estate.
A Romanesque chapel stands between houses No. 78 and 43. It adds another village building to the sacred architecture around St Mark’s. Visitors interested in medieval and Baroque architecture will find different periods and building styles in Střítež, each of which can be explored at a specific location.
Village square, well, and monuments
A bell tower stands on the village square, an example of folk architecture from the mid-19th century. A monument in front of the tower commemorates Josef Zvěřina, who was born in Střítež. He was a theologian, a signatory of Charter 77, and a campaigner for religious freedom. The square thus brings together a local building and the memory of someone from the community.
The historic “Libuše” well is in front of the municipal office. According to legend, Princess Libuše watered her horse there. The story is part of local tradition. At the entrance to Střítež, a Baroque statue of St John of Nepomuk, dating from 1737, stands among the lime trees.
There are also historic memorials along the road to Třebíč. Halfway between Střítež and Třebíč, a stone cross stands on the right-hand side of the road; the village had it erected in 1876. The flat memorial stone in front of it is a cultural monument. A visit to the village centre can therefore be supplemented with a look at a monument outside the village square.
