Heraltice – Local History and a Peaceful Setting
Accommodation in Heraltice
Heraltice originated in the 12th to 13th century as a parish settlement on the old road from Vienna to Prague. The village lies away from the district’s main roads; it is quiet there year-round, with little traffic. A stay here combines a historical focus with a peaceful setting: the church, statues and traces of former fortifications shape the village’s history, while cycling and autumn mushroom picking bring the surrounding area into the picture.
Church of Saint Giles
The Church of Saint Giles can first be understood from its floor plan: the nave is rectangular, the presbytery has a polygonal end, and the centrally aligned tower has a square floor plan. The nave forms the church’s main longitudinal section, while the presbytery is the chancel. Its multi-sided end distinguishes the presbytery in the floor plan from the rectangular nave. The oldest surviving parts are the presbytery and part of the nave. At the same time, the church was completely rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1716. The building thus brings together older surviving fabric and a clearly dated later renovation. If you pay attention to architectural forms, you can consider these features of the floor plan alongside this sequence of historical changes.
Statues and Local Memory
Two statues with different points of reference also form part of the village’s history. Near the church stands the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, created in 1738 by the sculptor D. Lipart from Brtnice. The statue of Saint Florian stands in the upper part of the village square. It commemorates the fire of 1761, which left the church unharmed. The statue of John of Nepomuk adds an art-historical note through its sculptor and date; Florian connects the square with the memory of the fire.
Fortified Manor and Firefighting Museum
Small fragments of cellar rooms and fortifications from the fortified manor of the Lords of Heraltice survive at Panský dvůr. The Firefighting Museum adds another layer of architectural history: it is housed in a historic building erected at the end of the 18th century on the remains of a former 13th-century fortified manor. A major expansion of the museum was opened on 28 June 2014 to accommodate more exhibits. If you plan to visit the museum, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
Cycling and Autumn Forests
The area around Heraltice is suitable for cycling. The dense nearby forests are good for mushroom picking in autumn. The two activities also differ in their seasonal timing: autumn is the clear season for mushroom picking, while cycling offers a different focus for your stay. If you want to organize your stay around your interests, you can therefore set the cultural sights in the village apart from activities in the surrounding area, rather than trying to fit every option into the same day’s itinerary.
