Radňoves: Natural Setting and Firefighting History
Accommodation in Radňoves
Radňoves combines a medieval settlement layout with a natural setting at the transition between two bioregions and a rich firefighting history. The municipality can therefore be explored from several perspectives: through the village’s layout, its local flora and fauna, and its historic firefighting tradition.
A natural setting at the transition between two bioregions
Radňoves lies on the edge of the Velkomeziříčský Bioregion and borders directly on the Sýkořský Bioregion. Biogeographically, the municipality belongs to the Hercynian Subprovince. The area is home to transitional flora from both bioregions, including submontane species such as hairy sedge, three-leaved bittercress, and round-leaved sundew.
The transitional character is reflected both in the biogeographic classification and in the described plant life. A look at nature in Radňoves brings together two specific aspects: its location between the bioregions and examples of the local flora.
The fauna of Radňoves includes, among others, eastern and western hedgehogs, noble crayfish, freshwater pearl mussels, fire salamanders, smooth newts, sand lizards, and smooth snakes. The municipality notes that some of these species are listed in the Red Book. Together with the plants, they make nature a subject that encompasses both the transition between the bioregions and specific species.
A medieval forest-strip settlement
Radňoves was founded in the Middle Ages as a ring-shaped forest-strip settlement. Its fields extend radially into the surrounding countryside. The history of the village can therefore be described not only through its age, but also through the layout of its fields.
A stone cross stands beside the chapel, donated by the inhabitants of Radňoves in 1913. Its dedication gives this local memorial a specific historical connection.
Firefighting history and the museum
Volunteer firefighters began building the Firefighting Equipment Museum in Radňoves in 2008. The museum preserves written, photographic, and film archive materials, connecting firefighting equipment with various forms of local heritage. Visits are possible by telephone appointment in advance. If you would like to visit the museum, arrange this beforehand.
The Radňoves fire brigade still preserves a hand-operated, four-wheeled, horse-drawn fire engine. The firefighters used it, among other things, during the filming of “Andělské oči.” The fire engine is another specific feature of the local firefighting history.
A historic gathering is also recorded with a date and number of participants: on 26 August 2018, Radňoves hosted the 22nd gathering of enthusiasts of historic firefighting equipment. More than a hundred firefighters took part with historic equipment. The gathering adds a dated event centered on historic firefighting equipment to the stories of the museum and its collection.
