When choosing a stay in Libice nad Doubravou, cultural history and landscape offer different points of focus. The historic Libická stezka trade route ran through the town and connected Bohemia with Moravia. In the Doubrava Valley area, it ran below the main ridge of the Železné hory. This brings together a wider regional trade connection and a precisely identified landscape setting.

Landscape and trails

Nearby is the Svatomariánské údolí Nature Reserve, covering 13.3679 hectares. It includes a naturally preserved stretch of the Doubrava and well-preserved ash and alder alluvial forests in the adjacent floodplain. Mount Spálava is located in the settlement area of the same name within Libice nad Doubravou and is the second-highest peak in the Železné hory. High rock formations known as Mrazové sruby are nearby. The landscape therefore offers different points of interest: the river and floodplain on the one hand, and the mountain and rocks on the other.

You can explore Svatomariánské údolí from Libice nad Doubravou along local roads and paths. On the way, you will pass former mills and a former glass-grinding workshop. However, no marked hiking trail runs through the valley. If you plan to explore it, take this trail situation into account when finding your way and check conditions locally.

Church and castle

The Church of St. Giles is considered the oldest monument in Libice nad Doubravou. A wooden predecessor building probably stood here as early as the 10th century. The Gothic nave and the tower, built in the early 17th century in the High Baroque style, point to different construction periods. The church also contains a 14th-century baptismal font. This gives the site three historical layers: the presumed predecessor building, the medieval baptismal font and the early modern tower.

Libice nad Doubravou Castle offers a different architectural accent. It originally dates from the 18th century and is a Baroque castle. It was extended and rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style in the 19th century. The castle, too, reveals changes across different construction periods.

Crafts, accommodation and regional cuisine

Production at Antonín Pešout’s glassworks ended in 1915. Only the residential building remains, while the workshops are ruins. The machinery was powered by a 16-horsepower water turbine. The former glass production is part of the industrial history of Libice nad Doubravou.

Pilnův statek offers accommodation for visitors who hike or cycle in the surrounding area. The farmstead dates from the late 18th century, was reconstructed in 1869 and is owned by the municipality. The municipality is trying to preserve it as a typical farmhouse. If you are considering staying here, check availability and conditions before your trip.
