Oudolen lies in the long valley of the Oudoleňský potok, also known as the Oudoleňka. The chapel, the historic Hraběnčin křížek and the orchard avenue shape the character of the village and its appeal as a place to stay. There is also a small family mill that welcomes visitors. Oudolen thus combines local history with a place to go for a walk and an insight into flour production.

The valley and a walk to Hraběnčin křížek

The long valley of the Oudoleňský potok gives the landscape a distinct shape. Both names, Oudoleňský potok and Oudoleňka, refer to the same stream. If you would like to make your walk a trip with a specific destination, consider the route to Hraběnčin křížek, which is a designated walking destination. The name of the orchard avenue, Oudoleňská ovocná alej ke křížku, also refers to the cross.

The avenue follows a restored path that is 500 metres long. It is planted with 40 apple trees, 30 pear trees, 30 cherry trees and 20 plum trees. The mix of fruit tree species gives the path its character; the avenue also provides a habitat for animals and a source of food for bees. In the 2019 Avenue of the Year competition, it was named the winner for the Vysočina Region.

The wayside cross also has a long history: a map of the Polná estate from 1780 already marks Hraběnčin křížek on the road from Oudolen to Jitkov. In 2019, the municipality restored the cross and installed seating and an information board there. The historic map entry and the later additions provide two different points of reference for the site: its early mention and its development in 2019.

The chapel and local history

The chapel in Oudolen was built in 1926 in memory of the soldiers who fell in the First World War, from 1914 to 1918, and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its tower contains a bronze bell. Together, the year of construction and the dedication reflect the building’s commemorative purpose; the bell is another specific feature of the chapel.

Another historical reference reaches further back: old documents mention Oudolen in connection with a branch of the Liběcká Trail. This adds a link to a historic route to the village’s history, while the 1780 map entry concerns the area around Hraběnčin křížek. Oudolen also traditionally holds a carnival procession, and a Christmas market is another local tradition. If you are planning a trip around either of these events, check the dates in advance.

A look inside the family mill

The small family-run Mlýn Oudolen welcomes visitors to come and see the mill in person. Please arrange the visiting details before your arrival. At the Kryštofek family’s mill, rye flour is ground using original machinery built during the Second World War. This gives a visit to the mill a specific historical dimension, while keeping the flour-making process connected to the history of the machinery.

Mlýn Oudolen produces and sells rye, wheat and spelt flour. If you are interested in buying flour, please check the arrangements in advance as well. The three types of flour offer another insight into the mill’s work and provide a practical link to local production. A visit and a possible flour purchase are separate reasons for coming, so please check the relevant arrangements before you arrive.
