Horní Újezd brings together architectural history, commemorative culture and practical opportunities for a cycling trip. The Church of St Peter and Paul and the Újezdský Mill offer different points of connection with the town’s history; two described cycling approaches also make route choice a consideration when planning your trip.

Church and Architectural History

The Church of St Peter and Paul has a Romanesque core and Gothic alterations. Its tower dates from the 16th century; the church was remodelled in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building thus brings together several periods rather than belonging to just one phase of construction.

The church tower bell bears the image of the Madonna and Child and dates from 1509. The sweeping view from the hill by the church is another of this place’s described features. The architecture, bell and view each offer a different perspective: the building’s forms tell of changes over time, while the bell’s image and age provide a specific historical reference.

The cemetery wall provides a separate point of reference for dating: its western section dates from the 18th century. Along with the church’s various construction phases, this date offers another clue for distinguishing the historical features of Horní Újezd.

A Memorial Plaque at the Rectory

A plaque at the rectory in Horní Újezd commemorates František Pařil. It was unveiled on 27 June 2019 as part of the Poslední adresa project. This memorial offers a different focus from architectural history: it connects a named place with a specific person and a recorded date.

Cycling to Horní Újezd

Two routes are relevant for arriving by bicycle. Horní Újezd can be reached by bicycle from cycle route 5103 near Kojetice. Another option leads from cycle route 481 at Třebíč via Slavice and Mikulovice to Horní Újezd.

The two routes differ in their stated points of connection: one links Horní Újezd with the cycle route near Kojetice, while the other goes via Třebíč and the villages of Slavice and Mikulovice. Which option suits your ride depends on which of these points you want to connect to. Check the current route signs before setting off.

The Mill and Natural Features

The Újezdský Mill lies southwest of Horní Újezd on the Rokytná River and is mentioned as early as the 14th century. Its riverside location and early mention offer two different ways of exploring the town’s history: the name is historically documented, while the connection to the Rokytná locates the site geographically.

Named places are also associated with natural features. Anemone hepatica grows at the Újezdský Mill. The protected species Cyclamen purpurascens grows in the Liští fields.

Traditional Foods

Traditional foods in Horní Újezd include fish soup, usually fried carp with potato salad, small mushrooms pickled in vinegar, vánočka and pastries. The selection includes both savoury dishes and baked goods, offering another perspective on local history and culture alongside the church, memorial plaque and mill.
